  • reverse rotation?

    Hi Everyone,

This is my first time on your site, looks great - heaps of info. I've got a nutty project on the go at the moment that I hope you help me with.

I'm looking for a V6 engine which can be re built to spin in reverse direction (anti clockwise). Has this been done before with any of the 60o engines?

Thanks in advance for any info or leads you can supply.

The only Japanese engine I know of that spins backwards is the Honda (except for their latest fours) and unfortunatly they don't make much torque. Did you have a specific engine in mind?

        Detroit Diesel will run backwards.

Aside from that..LQ1 comes closest, as the cams can be swapped around.

Figuring out timing, FI, oil pump, I'm sure a lot of other things would be a bitch too....

        water pump, alternator,.....

How about swapping your + and - battery cables? :P

if you wanted to do a V8, theres a lot of reverse rotation engine, since boat engines come in reverse rotation to balance out torque. What is this for?

            QFT!

You would need a custom cam, and at least least oil pump drive, but a dry sump pump could be utilized.

Alterator will charge forward or reverse, the difference is the cooling. Real world example, I used a GM alternator (10si IIRC), on my '81 Prelude for a few years, since I couldn't get a Honda one quick enough. At the time I had my uncle install it, since I was working out of town, he said afterwards that it pretty much bolted right on, just needed one spacer. I then had to add a relay to one of the charge terminals, otherwise my battery would drain.

Injection can be the same, other than the crank trigger would need to be slightly modified, so that the home notch is in the right spot.

The following is optional, but recomended:

Lead in grooves will need to be filled and then new ones added. Some cranks don't have these lead in grooves, which would be a preffered choice.

Water pump can be run the right way by run on the opposite die of the belt, bacically use a forward rotation pulley on a reverse rotation pump and it will turn the correct way.

The most difficult item to attain for doing this is the cam.

Reverse rotation starters can be found quite easily.

DOHC wont work because you wont have tension on the belt spinning it backwards. Thats about all the help I can give on spinning one backwards.

                  Hi Guys,

Thanks for the input. Better give you more info.

I'm re powering a 1964 Citroen ID19 which is a mid engine front wheel drive north/south engine transaxle layout. The origional engine spins backwards which is why I'm looking for an engine I can build to spin backwards as I want to retain the origional trans and brakes (inboard disc with cailpers that mount to the trans body and are under pressure from the hydraulic suspension system).

The engine bay will accomidate a V6 and I thought that if it were a 60 degree V6 I might be narrower than a 90o V6?

If I could find a V8 which is short enough from fly wheel to timing end I could make it fit into the engine bay but so far they have been a little too long due mostly to the harmonic balancers and accessory pully sticking out so far.

A maranised Chev V6 which spins backwards looks like one direction worth following at the moment.

I'm in Aus so don't have any experience with Detroit Diesel engines - what capacity are these?

                  Thanks to all,

                  Bing.

Detroit Diesel was a joke. It's a big truck engine.

LQ1 is way too big for what you are doing. No American engine that I know of runs counter-clockwise.

um, since when do honda motors turn backwards??? the tranny may be on the passenger side, but the tranny is designed differently than a domestic.

only reverse rotation motor i can think of is a corvair motor. you could try a marine engine. another thought would be to see if you can flip the diff in the transaxle. i know of vw guys are able to do this with the old beetle when installing the corvair motor.

                        Sharkey,

Honda 4 engines ran anticlockwise until the latest prelude and S2000 which run clockwise.

Unfortunatly the diff cant be turned over on this transmission, would have been a very nice solution though.

With all the work needed to find and install a counter-clockwise engine, wouldn't it be easier to have new gears machined for the differential, to change rotation to a clockwise engine?

                            Leaves a lot more options...

Either way he's going to have to make adapters for the engine to mate up the trans of his car, so thats not a big deal. Picking up a used boat engine would be the quick fix.

This place has Chevy V6's, says they have reverse roation, may want to check it out.
