  • Idea for swap....

Could I swap a 3100 into a VW Beetle? I have seen some body for sale real cheap like 500.00. That would be crazy! Basically a Porsche, the only thing is I doubt there would be enough room.

its possible, just about anything is possible. I know of a guy with 2 3.0l v6's in a sirrocco, putting a 660 in a bug isnt impossible. stupid? probably yeah. worth the time or money? probably not. you would have to do a shit-load of saw-zalling and reconstructive welding, probably add a ton of chassis hanging over the rear wheels which would give it just about the worst handling in the history of automobiles, you might even have to do some work to make it not pop wheelies when parked. I cant even really imagine the nightmare of work it would take, but its definitly possible.

      but dont do it, please.

aside of the engineering aspect, i don't see any problems. wheres all this chassis hanging over the rear wheels? GM FWD trannies put the engine and the bulk of the weight of the tranny forward of the axle centerline. i'd go for it. i've seen one with a cadillac 500 and th425 tranny installed in the back so there's no reason a little 60* couldn't fit.

1 in the front, and 1 in the back. 4WD Beetle!

yes, it is possible. I personally put a watercooled Jetta 1.8 GLI engine into a bug. Contact Kennedy Engineered Products (KEP). The state that they manufacture adapter plated to mate ANY engine (including old school dodge hemi's) up to a VW transaxle. They make all the shtuff for pinto powered sand rails, etc.....

All you have to do for mounting after that is build your subframe out in the rear apron for the front motor mounts.

Also, have the hood louvered, or put a large scoop in the lower front apron so you can drop the radiator into where the spare tire used to be in front. Worked just fine. Another benefit is that you can have a real heater now

Oh yeah, and DO put a shitload of ballast in the front end, cuz you'll flip it over backwards the first time you hit the gas.

Have any of you ever seen under a beettle hood? There is absoutly no room for anything but a flat engine. Any V6 or I4 is much too tall. So right there the whole back end would have to be cut to shit. Then you need to tear into the front of the car to mount a rad somehow. If you did manage to put a V6 or I4 in it it would have to be transverse mount and now you have to redo the entire rear suspension.

I agree with the above post. Its possible. But please dont do it.

Your best bet is to look for a chevy Corvair engine.

I'm sure that everyone understands, for most of the aforementioned ideas, the back seat is deleted, as is most of the interior. Best bet is to do a body pull off and frame the rest in. It will only look like a Beetle.

Where is that Damn Monster Garage when you need it?
