  • Might be engine swaping time

    I have a 87 Fiero and I might have a buyer for my 2.8 so I will be needing to through something in to my car. The two engines I am thinking about are the 3.4 tdc or the 3400.

    I dont car about aftermarket advability or how hard the electrical will be so with that aside what do you guys think.

    Either swap I do will be force fed, not when I swap it in but some time after when I have more time to fab up the necessary parts.

    if you have it, throw in the 3.4 tdc.

      doing a 3400 pushrod will be easier but the tdc's i hear were made for that car.

      not sure of 3400 potential but a guy has turboed a lq1 to 325 at the wheels on stock internals at 10psi with no problems that i know of.

          i dont see how one would be harder then the other at this point. i mean, he has to rewire the car for dis with whatever engine he runs, so its realy isnt any different either way.

            the TDC is more difficult to fit, due to sheer size, but it fits.

            My vote wasn't really coming from an ease of installation at the present moment point of vierw, but getting the later planned upgrades in there.

            Also there are more available internal direct fit and modified fit items for the pushrod than the TDC as well.

            Over all, in the end the 3400 will be easier and get just as much power if not more than the TDC, for the same or less money and time invested.

              i dont think sheer size is a big deal in a fiero. i have seen pics of a 502/510 in a fiero. a guy localy has a 4.9l caddy motor in his without cutting anything, and it still has room to work on it. a tdc is bigger than a 3400, but not bigger than a 4.9l.

                Actually a TDC IS wider than a 4.9.

                Fitment is a slight issue in a Fiero, yes there is space, but it is still tight. Not much room left over for a good set of headers, or fitting the turbo(s), or teh related tubing.

                But even still the 3400 still has more potential, when it comes to aftermarket and NEW parts, replacment or upgrade.

                  Personally I'd go with the 3400. It'll be easier to mount in the bay, you can use your stock tranny IIRC, ease of maintenance/repairs, and more room for the turbo. You would have to wire it up for the DIS, but that can be done with the harness and computer from a car with the gen2 2.8/3.1. If your area is like mine, then you'd have a hard time finding a dohc harness and ecm. The gen2 harness and ecm is widely available in the j/ys.

                  But hey, Its your project. Do what you wish. The 3.4 dohc will give you more "out of the box" power. But I'm looking at the entire project....

                    When the swap comes I am going to install Mega Squirt II. So both motors will be almost the same to wire up.

                    Have any of you guys looked at the Short Star? I know it is a 90* block but it has the 60* bolt pattern. I am going to be doing some more digging but I need to find out what I have to do to get a manual flywheel to bolt up to the motor, and I also need to find out how many teeth are on the crank shaft position sensor so I can make sure Mega Squirt can control the spark. I would have to ditch the coil on plug and switch to the older DIS.

                    These are all just thoughts right now but thanks for you opinions guys.

                      I wouldn't bother personally, there's not much of an off the shelf aftermarket for them, and are almost considered "bastard" engines, that are not quite like what they are supposed to be similar to.

                      If I was to go Short*, I'd go full out N*, but still would rather use a genIII 660. Open the hood on a N* equipped caddy, you'll see why. They're friggen HUGE.
