  • Beretta to Sunbird

I am dropping a V6 into my Pontiac Sunbird (currently has a 2.0 OHC), and I found a 3.1 5spd Beretta at a local yard. A quick look and it looks like the mounts are the same, but I am wondering if there would be any fabrication required to do the swap?

I know I will need an ecm, and fuel pump in addition to the engine and wiring.

Anything else I will need to know?

    No, no reall fabrication.

I'm assuming that you found a '90 or '91 Beretta, since those are the only two years that have the 3.1 and use the same mounts as the J-body.

When I did the swap in my 1985 Skyhawk I used a 1990 Pontiac Tempest as a donor.

I had to modify the winging harness slightly for it to work in the J-body.

I'll make one recomondation though, and that is to use a newer 660, like the 3100 or 3400.

For info on that swap look at www.domesticcrew.com

Yeah, forgot to say its a 1990 Beretta.

I had heard that because the Sunbird (1989) uses an electronic speedo, I can probably make it work with the Beretta ecm, just wiring in a new connector....what are your thoughts on this?

Yep, should work no problem, since I tested a Sunbird speedo that I later aquired and compared it to the L-body Speedo, worked fine.

BTW, the wire for the speedo will already be a plug in the wire, going to the ECM, all that may be required may be a pin location change in taht plug.

Okay, another question...a guy can hook me up with the ECM off an 89 Cavalier with a 3100 SFI...will it work on the 3.1 MPFI?

89 Cavaliers were never equipped with a 3100.

Did this guy swap in a 3100, and use the stock ECM, any custom programming?

If you're going to be running a stock 3.1, then use stock programming.

yea that doesnt count. sunbirds pre 89 all used 1st gen front clips.

what i mean (wich im sure you have figured out) is a 1st gen cavy clip on a 2nd gen cavy/bird.
