  • Do we talk 3.8 Here??

Hello, my first post at the 60DegreeV6.com forum!

I have a chance to pick up a 1998 3.8 V6 out of a FWD Ponch for a good price has low miles and new intake plenum.

My question is... Has anyone used a 3.8 FWD in the RWD position? And is it a pain to find a transmission that will bolt on to the 98 GM 3.8 V6?

I have heard that the 2.8 Chevy S-10 Transmissions will bolt directly on? Would that be a standard transmission or an automatic?

Another query is... what parts are interchangable with other V6's to get the most HP and best Torque?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

RE: Do we talk 3.8 Here??

Unfortunately, the 3.8L is not a 60ºV6, but a 90º V6. As far as bolting up to a RWD tranny, it should be similar to the 60V6s since they share the same tranny in the FWD configuration. With this said, it will most likely also share the problem that the 660s do with the starter being on the wrong side. I have never messed with a 3800, so this is all just assumptions...

RE: Do we talk 3.8 Here??

there would be various issues with the starter and accessories. The 3.8 found in the v6 F-Bodies if the RWD version of the 3800 so you would be better of going with that engine. Or atleast finding the parts you need to convert the 3800 you have (not sure if you can).

We hate the 3.8 here so you may want to try:

lol only reason i take my 3.8 over my 3.1, is when it comes time to change those plugs on the 3100, i dont have to go through the trouble of taking the front mounts off and pulling the motor forward

go to L67swap.com, they might be able to help you out even if you just have the L36

If this is for an S-dime, build the 2.8, much easier to fit and will, when done right, get you more power and agility than using the heavier outdated 3800.

If you want more proof, I can provide pics and more information on my 3.2L (That started life as a 2.8L) in my 1985 S-15 Jimmy, that thus far has layed down 218 HP and 270 Ft/lbs @ the rear wheels. Also weighs about 150+ lbs LESS than a 3800. I have about the same amount of money, possibly less invested building a 660, as is required to fit a different engine, like a FWD 3800 or SBC, but more fun and more unique.

That's odd. I dont have to take off any engine mounts to change plugs off of my L67, or the LA1 motors? Maybe it's because there's more room in the engine bay of a 3rd gen cav with a 3400 than there is with a 2nd gen. But I can just dig right in there.

Sorry, I should have been more specific, I mean compared to my 3100 in my 00 GP, to the L67 in my 97 GP

I ment that the L67 (3800) is way easier to change the plugs in the back compared to my 3100 which is even more of a bitch despite pulling the motor forward only because of the damned smog tube that runs right over the damned plugs.....it was also a bitch to work on my 89 olds cutlass's 3.1 MPFI rear plugs even after rocking the motor forward....since its a 60 degree insted of a 90 degree, my hands hardly fit back there enough to get them out (shrugs)

You can tell between the two just by the difference in shape, and most importantly how much closer the 3100 is to the firewall...im about to just hack the EGR system out of the damned thing and get a block off plate, and get this EGR simulator http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_p...ts1.php?id=176

Yeah man stick with a 2.8, they are a dime a dozen, easily maintained, and cheaper to build. If i remember right, the 2.8MPFI and the 3.1MPFI are like identical apart from displacement....dont quote me on that though if im wrong. You could get more power out of a an SFI 3800, just costs more to do it.

That looks like Cali emmisions crap hanging off the front of that 3100, and probably where the confusion is coming from. The only thing I is remove my coil pack on my 3100 ('98 Malibu), because I like space, when I work.
I'm not very familiar with those CCCP (Cali Comunist Controls and Parts), but even getting the EGR sim, will give you greif without changing much more.

On my Jimmy, I don't need to remove a thing to get to the plugs, but that's also a beinifit of longitudily mounted engines and the fact that I built that engine bay, so I made it easy to work on.

i wouldnt be suprised if this car came from cali, i got a good ass deal on it from enterprise rent-a-car, normaly i wouldent have went with a used rental, but i payed 6500 for it with only 43K on the clock, with a 2 year bumper to bumper not one scratch, or ding, or dent, and it still runs beautifull, i never had one thing go wrong with it literaly!!

That doesn't sound like too bad of a deal to me.

Well. On my 3400, I have more room in the engine bay of the 3rd gen cav than a 2nd gen, and even more room than the GA does. I can reach down from the top and take off the Ehxhaust, Exh. Manifolds, hell if i stretch far enough I can probably get to the crank sensor too. The motor fits in there with almost too much room to spare. For the front plugs, that looks kinda hard to get to. I dont have those front/top motor mounts installed currently. I'll have to get some in the future though.

For the Cali emmissions thing. There should be one of those stickers on there saying specifically that it meets California emissions or something. Unless, of course, you've gotten rid of it.
