Go ahead, try that. The bellhousing will still need modification for clearance of the gear.
On most GM bells, yes, you will need to grind some metal off of the bellhousing. However, you don't need to cut a pocket. That's why I said you may need to do some grinding. When using a Dakota 2.5l bellhousing to mate an AX15 or an NV3550 to the 660, I've heard that you won't even need to grind any metal. I'm going to be buying a Dakota Bell for testing some stuff so I'll post pics somewhere down the road.
It's all about choices and there are plenty with these engines.
