  • get one running out of the car

hello have not been here in a long time just finished pulling a 3.1 out of a 92 cavy this morning am going to use this engine in a sandrail project it will be coupled to a vw trans via an adapter manual trans car was auto i have a whole truck load of questions just to get me started i need all the help i can get just so youhave a feel for my skill level have 16 hot rods, prostreetcars, streetlegal sandrails, under my belt i also run a company called konwire we do custom aftermarket automotive wiring harnesses for pretty much anything on wheels that goes fast and some not so fast stuff any way i may have a bunch of engine management questions for this build i picked this engine because i like its compact size my new car will weigh 1750 lbs and if i can eventually manage 200to 220 hp out of this motor that will make me happy i will keep my question brief and to the point and might add that for the present i would like too keep this motor running with the mpfi

    1) this motor has power steering and air wihich i don't need are there pulley setups that just support alt and water pump what vehicle do i find these in
2)do i need a vss input to keep this setup live
    3) this car will be mid engined and mtd the long way tb will be pointed towards rear of car
    4) if i decide to go carbed is there an intake and dist i can get for this engine
    5) what about set of headers allthough i am looking for some thing up swept
    6) this pcm is for an auto car do i need one for a manual car

i will post more questions as they come to mind

There is a stock A/C compressor bypass pulley, came on very few 2.8s from FWD cars and heard of a 3.1 that it came on, but just one car.
Anyway, you can order the pulley from the dealer, easiest car to look up seems to be an '88 Corsica, 2.8 no air. You need a bolt for this pulley too. I don't know the part number but I'm sure there are a few people on this forum that do.
For the P/S bypass will be custom, some guys have used a second A/C pulley bypass pulley and tapped one of the P/S bolt holes for it. Others have used a non P/S pulley from a mid/late '80s 2.5L S-10, since it is almost the same size as the OEM power steering pump pulley it will retain a lot of belt coverage on the water pump. A custom bracket is needed for this. There is a member that has built this exact set-up, I can find you a pic if need be.

2)do i need a vss input to keep this setup live
Yes, the Load (among other things) and along with other inputs calculates load, and also turns on a few aspects that need to be there. Like part throttle cruise lean mode, cruise high idle (like when you push the clutch in to coast down a hill into a corner for example). You can remove the VSS from the FWD tranny and make a plate or ring to go on an output shaft. Or you may be able to use a VSS from an older Cav, that used a cable speedo and modify that sensor, like I did for my truck, where I am running an '88 Cav (Z24) ECM.

    3) this car will be mid engined and mtd the long way tb will be pointed towards rear of car
That's a statement, so yes. You could turn the intake around, it will bolt to the heads just fine and seal to the lifter valley, but the TB interferes with the front coverand belt routing. Besides in a sandrail, it would probably be better to keep the TB pointed to the back.

    4) if i decide to go carbed is there an intake and dist i can get for this engine
    No.

    5) what about set of headers allthough i am looking for some thing up swept
    Custom

    6) this pcm is for an auto car do i need one for a manual car
It will run 11tybillion times better with a manual ECM, which is as simple as a PROM swap. There are changes in the source code for the properties of an auto tranny that a manual tranny doesn't have. Like constant load on the engine, where as the manual changes more drasitically, etc.
