  • What can I easily put in my 91 beretta (3.1)?

I have a 91 Beretta with a 3.1 motor in it. The motor snapped a connecting rod, and we're pretty sure it trashed the cylinder wall. I was talking to a mechanic friend of mine who said that the earlier 3.1 Chevy engines (like the one I have) had an intrinsic flaw in them focused around the crank system. He told me that the engines were fixed sometime in the mid 90s. I'm looking for a simple swap, where I (preferably) don't have to change or rebuild the tranny or replace the wiring harness. But I want to get a decent performing, reliable engine.

Now I've read up on this topic quite a bit (and have used the search function). I found a great website (3400swap.com) with lots of good information; however, on there he is saying that the write-up is based around the motor going into 94-95 cars with the 3.1. It seems like everyone's recommendation is the 3400 motor. I assume that because it's so highly recommended, that it's both reliable, and has decent power. I've read on this site that it is as easy as a drop in (?fits like a glove?), but I've also seen the opposite, and that there are a fair amount of modifications that need to be done. The latter is why I'm writing this post. I assume that the modifications needed are all dependent on what model year car the motor is going into. What I really don't want is to get 80% of the way through the swap and all of a sudden get surprised by something.

So, since I'm sure that there are some of you here that have actually done just this, I wanted to ask you for your help.

What motor can I drop in? What car should it come from? What do I need to get from the donor car in addition to the motor, anything? What modifications will need to be made, or new parts purchased to make it work? Will the motor bolt up to the tranny? Is it a ?drop in, hook up, turn key, drive away? type of deal?

Thanks so much for your help, and I?m sorry this became so long.

RE: What can I easily put in my 91 beretta (3.1)?

I'd look for a 2000-2003 3400. The transmission will bolt right up to it, but you will have to figure out how to mount the trans kickdown cable to the throttle body assuming your using a 3spd auto, but no worries if its a 5spd manual. You will also need an egr adapter plate which you can find someone on here to make you one, and also new motor mounts of which someone can also make you a set. You can keep the 3.1L wiring harness and injectors. About the only other thing to address is that you will need a new downpipe I believe so a visit to the exhaust shop is a must (also get them to change the exhaust to a 2.5" while there at it for better flow on the new engine). All and all figure around 1000 for the complete swap.

Yes, I have an Auto. Do I need all new motor mounts, or just the one in the front? The ECU won't need programming, right? And I will move my existing sensors into the new motor as well?

        Hi there!

The swap guide is always being updated. Older cars like yours I have less experience with, but the setup is generally the exact same. In the older version of the guide I mention that I started to write it for 94 and 95 cars. Now it basically covering any year of car. I add information as soon as I get it in.

What version of the guide do you have? You should get 2.5.5 if you don't have it.

Here's the list of 3400 equiped cars (From 04 and earlier):

        1999-2004 Pontiac Grand Am
        1999-2004 Olds Alero
        1999-2004 Chevy Venture
        1999-2004 Pontiac Montana
        2001-2004 Pontiac Aztek
        1999-2004 Olds Silhouette
        2002-2004 Buick Rendezvous
        2000-2004 Monte Carlo
        2000-2004 Impala
        1996-1998 Olds Silhouette
        1996-1998 Pontiac Trans Sport/Montana
        1996-1998 Chevy Lumina APV/Venture
        1995 Grand Am GT

ya, 2.5.5 is the one that I have. So you're saying that it should work for a car as early as 91?

Yes. Though the farther you go back in years, the ease of change gets less. If you have any mechanical skills at all, the swap should be no problem at all.

The ECU will run the engine perfectly. Use your injectors (or upgrade to 3100 injectors). Remember to find a 96 - 98 3100 injector harness to make swapping in the ECT sensor clean and easy (Though not nessesary). You can buy the EGR adapter plate from Ben's store to fix the EGR problem (Which you will want).

the ECU will run the 3400 like complete chit and not run above idle on the 3.1 program and injectors.

find another MPFI 3.1 and swap it in and go on your merry way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't ben have a chip to get the 3100-3400's to run good on the MFI puter?

So IF I decide to get a 3400 or a 3100 to replace my 3.1mpfi, can I just get the ECU for one of those engines and still have all my gauges and such work fine?

My concern on getting another 3.1mpfi is this...

I was told by my mechanic that the 3.1 motors from the early 90?s had an intrinsic flaw in them focused around the crank (sorry to repeat this part from above). This happens to be the same place my problem came from. However, he said that a few years later, Chevy fixed this problem.

Has anyone else heard of this, or is he just crazy? Is the 3100 motor the ?updated? version with the fixed Crank system? OR is there no real flaw in the 3.1 mpfi motor to worry about, and my experience was just a fluke?

The flaw with the crank was actually in the early 2.8L engines and was fixed around 87-88 when the main journal size was increased. All of the engines since that time have all used the same 981 casting crank.

i don't think its done, but i'd like to test it for him one of these days. i'll never get away from fixing the lumina no matter if i gave it to my sister or not, it might wind up with the '01 3100 in it
