  • 3.4 TDC swap question

Okay, before anyone tells me something dumb, this is just an idea right now. I currently drive a 91 lumina euro with the 3.1 v6, with approximately 160K miles. I found a junked out lumina Z34 with everything still in it (130K miles), inluding the TDC 3.4. From what I can tell, I think the engine spit a main seal, since crawling under the car, everything is splattered with what looks like oil. I am probably going to be buying the whole car because I want some things out of it (seats, hood and such.) As an larger idea, I want to drop the 3.4 in my euro in place of my 3.1. I know this has been done before, and there are probably a zillion posts on it, but I'm wondering if this is first a feasible idea, and second, if it is worth the trouble (I have time and space, just limited $$.), and thirdly, if there is a thread about a complete walkthrough of the swap, and maybe some simple mods while I at it since I am probably going to tear it down and rebuild it. I'm not sure what year the Z34 is exactly, but I think between 91-93. Am I going to have problems? I'm only 17 and in high school, so this is going to be a summer project for me.

if you have the complete car to work with i cant see any major problems. mostly the cost will be rebiulding the tdc, other than that its just physical labor.

If you can get the whole car ... why not just fix up the Z .. lot less work than swapping motors .. the Z is all setup for everything .. And has less mileage ..

Well, the Z's body is in a little bit less than even good condition, plus it has no wheels and the windows are smashed out, it's missing the ground effects too, so thats why I wanna yank the 3.4 out and put it in my euro. Anyway, glad to know that it is at least a okay idea. But one last question: I understand and have heard that due to design and size of the TDC, that the engine has to drop out the bottom. someone told me that it's possible to yank out the top? what do you guys think, and thanks again for the help.

it is definitely possible. After all from 91 to 96 they offered both engines. Some of your problems will be the fun of power steering hoses, where the altenator was/is located, if your transmission can handle it. You probably have the non-electronic T4/4T60 otherwise known as the TH440T4. There will be some rerouting on your heater hoses, brake booster, electrical wires, and possibly the throttle cables. It won't be easy, assuming the engine works well and the sensors, just a matter of adpating everything in. Do yourself a favor change the timing belt on the 3.4L before you stick it into the car.
