  • Just curious, Beretta or J body + 3.4 TDC?

Anyone try this yet? I'm trying to think of another interesting project to work on in the future now that i pretty much know how ever single little peice goes together on a 3.4 TDC. Im envisioning a beretta GTU with a 3.4 or a cavalier convertable with a z24 package on it....just some ideas. Anyone try either of these swaps before?

yes they have, and none ever ran. i know of a j-body one for sure. it was a nightmare. the rad has to be moved forward, blower fan has to be deleted, the master cyl. would have to be mounted under the floor. the biggest nightmare is exaust. there physicaly is no room to run the exaust, not even a stock manifold would work as the steering rack is in the way on one side, and the rad on the other (even though its moved forward as far as it can be).

basicly, the best way to put a tdc in a j l or n body would be to mount a rear end, face it to the back, and mate it to a t5. this is one project i would actualy like to do, with it turboed. 350+hp to the back wheels in a 2600lb car would be seriously sweet.

I kinda had guessed, its amazing how a 3.4 DOHC starts with the same little block, then blows up into this monster and almost totally fills up the engine bay of a W-body. I was guessing with all of the 3x00 swaps to j-bodies and n/l bodies somebody must have been crazy enough to try it! I may still try a 3400 in a convertable or a GTU...

Sounds like a neat idea, but no way it would still be 2600lbs after converting to RWD, swapping in the heavier DOHC engine, and hanging a couple turbos on it. The weight would add up fast. I would be surprised if you could get the weight under 3000lbs. At that point, you would be better starting with a 3rd gen F-body and doing the turbo DOHC swap.

im sure i could get the weight down to 2600lbs. if you figure you all about 300lbs to the car between the rear end, dohc motor, turbos, ect brings you right around 3000lbs. however, being its already more of a track car, gut the interior, aftermarket fiberglass 1 peice front clip, hood, trunklid, doors, get rid of all the glass and replace with lexan, fuel cell, im sure there is at least 400lbs you can get rid of there.

i would say likley mid 11s from something like that.

Yea ok replace the glass with Lexan. Have you ever seen or worked with lexan? First off the number one problem will be scratches. It will literally scratch with corse paper towel. I am not shitting you. It may be bullet resistant but it is not scratch resistant. Next problem. It wont be hard to cut but who is going to shape it for you? Thats right maybe like 2 companies. That bring up the frinal problem COST. First off it is about 4 to 6 time more expensive than tempered glass. Add to that the cost of custom fabrication and forming. Yea your looking to spend well over 10,000 easily. Dont try and call me out on it either because I work with it all the time.

Take that money and buy a better turbo or something.
