  • 3.1 mpfi swap

Hello guys I,m new to this site but was refered here by a good friend But im having a bit of trouble determining what i need to do with my swap. I have an 82 Chevy Citation ok. and im swapping the 2.5 engine out and throwin a 3.1 MPFI in. I was told i need a custom prom chip to make it work correctly. the engine is coming out of a 1990 Pontiac 6000LE and i was under the dash and noticed a weird black box.. upon further inspection i realized this pontiac has VATS *vehicle anti theft system* and was told now i definetly need the custom chip to get the engine to even run now. My question to you guys if you know is. Do i need this chip? the guy i got the info from about the chip i trust him but a second opinion wouldnt hurt.
    Thanks alot guys

    RE: 3.1 mpfi swap

im not sure, i didnt know the 6000 had an antitheft system.

there are lots of different vehicles you can get stuff from for engine support. if it ends up that you have to get a custom chip burned and its going to cost a fair bit, look to another car for the ecm and wiring harness, like a j-body (cavalier/sunbird). they have the 3.1l and a pretty simple wiring harness to adapt.

Welcome to the group, Ed. Hey Marty, now we have a whole 3 members here with X-Bodies!!!! WoooHooo, we're on a roll now!!! LOL.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance
