  • FWD to AWD conversion?

Front wheel drive is good, but where I live all wheel drive would be better. I have a 92 Lumina Z34 and was wondering if anybody knew what transmission/transfer case combination would hook up to the 3.4 DOHC engine. I know there's gonna be some custom work to do with motor mounts and drive shafts, as well as finding a rear sub-frame. I was actually considering getting an aftermarket sub-frame and rear end from the new GTO since it's an independent rear suspension.

Found coolant in the oil and metal in the filter.
Also found a home in the engine compartment for a turbo and intercooler

Honestly you are better to sell the thing and get an AWD car. Unless for some reason you are seriously attached to this car.

if you realy wanted to, the aztek and equinox uses an awd 4t65e tranny. this tranny will physicaly bolt to your motor. however, you will need to find a 97 wiring harness and ecm from a z34 monte carlo and swap it in. also you will need to figure out the gearing in the transaxle, and have the rear end ratio be exacly the same (rear axle out of either vehicle may work). and you will have to cutom build a driveshaft.

what about the 6000 ste awd? did it have an "e" tranny or is it just a good old not pcm controlled tranny, that would bolt up, and if its not dependent on the ecm to function properly it would work. in any instance i dont think you'll find a swap in awd tranny that will let the dohc motor reach its full 7Krpm potential.

The 6000 AWD used the old mechanical 3spd automatic.

oh, its just a 3spd. thats no good for the tdc motor. how do they do tranverse awd? i never got a good look at it. is it like a standard fwd tranny and just has an output going aft, or, what do they do

That's something I forgot to consider. The high rpm potential of the engine would probably kill most trannies designed for a peak of 5k.

As far as gear ratio goes, since a 97 is an OBDII system, a good programmer should fix that. Since you brought it up, how do you correct for the 3.73 gear ratio swap on a 92 OBDI computer?

i dont know a whole lot about the automatics. i would have to think the tranny is shifted at specific rpms, when "x" psi is reached in the tranny's fluid computer, and factor in the throttle position and load. so maybe the fdr wouldnt matter, unless the pcm uses the vehical speed in its computations. you'd have to check out the mainpage for info, under the transmission section, 4t-60e.

or i'm just a ranting dumbass and said all that for nothing, you just get a custom chip burned with the extra pulses per mile already figured in.

Dropping the AWD conversion as it would require way too much engineering and fabrication to make it work. If I ever build a car from the frame up (possibly as a kit) I'll do the AWD thing.
