I've got an 84 2.8 V6 from an S-10 for parts. I want to get a reman long block and have seen some advertised. However, I need to know how to tell the difference between a 2.8 FWD and RWD when just looking at the long block. Based on the information on this site, it appears that the motor mount position, and starter motor location are the two main differences, but do not know how to tell them apart. The engine is going into a 72 MGB. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

RE: FWD vs RWD
When looking at the front of the engine (timing chain area), the FWD block will have the starter on the right side. Go to the gallery of the site, and there might be some comparison pictures in the iron head section. It will at least show 1 long block (with a description of which one it is) and you can possibly go from there. I'm sure some other people will be able to post some pictures comparing the 2.-Brad-

Starter location is the easiest
Looking on from the front a RWD engine has a Left (passenger side) starter. FWD is of course opposite.

WK,
I agree with BTY, a 88 or newer block is better, so go for that. If you want to remain with carb, you can also go for a 3.4L crate motor and still use all the parts off the 2.8L. For SFI, you can scrap the 2.8 and purchase a 93-95 Camaro 3.4L and use the SFI which works wonderful in an MGB.
Also, Not to remove you from this website because I HIGHLY reccomend info gathering from here specific to engine mods but also look into mgbexperience.com and search for the V6/V8 forums, you will find quite a number of guys there already having completed or completing various MGB GM 60 degree V6 conversion in carb, TBI, MPFI and SFI versions. I prefer SFI myself and have done several carb and SFI conversions with the SFI being a bit more powerful, nicer looking and so on when done correctly.
As for your rear axle, there are a number of combos, but i reccommend either a V6 Camaro T5 with a GM rear axle or a V8 Camaro T5 with the standard or converted GM rear axle. I just spoke to a fellow tonight who is considering an automatic, which i have heard of previously, but no one has got back to me on the installation of thier manuals before.
