  • 2.8 into sandrail

I have a 2.8 multi port(88 or 89) I want to put it in my wifes sandrail... when I pulled the motor from the celebrity wagon I also pulled all the wires and computer, the harness is essentially the way it was laid out in the car... should I just follow the leads from the engine plug ins back to the computer and get rid of the rest... also am I going to have a problem with the trany not being there, I am mating it to a vw trany via a kennedy adapter... I did remove the air pump and so need a new way to rounte the belt to run the water pump in the right direction--- wil an older water pump assembly bolt on to the block... any and all help is greatly appreciated...

    thanks, Mike

well the haynes book I bought did not have the wiring diagram for a 2.8 but after reading some it appears to me that the 3.1 is the same... I am hoping to fab an idler arm that will run the belt by the water pump so it will turn in the right direction - I removed the smog pump, a/c compressor and the power steering pump as these are not necessary on a sandrail - the hard part will be to find a belt that will fit...

Thanks for the info on the trany not being needed to run the engine...

Take care. will keep you posted on the project...

      Thanks. mike

Finding the right sized belt shouldnt be too hard. Just take a long piece of thin scrap wire or something that wont strech and "lace" it around the pullies (so it looks like the wire is the belt and the pullies will turn the right way). After lacing twist the ends together and take to your favorite auto parts store and say "I need a belt this size". It may take 5 or 6 trys to get the right sized belt but its the easyist way. My Dad did this when he took the smog pump off the Jimmy and it works great. Good Luck.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

Thanks for the help... I just can't get the wiring diagram to jive with the book or the pins on the computer... I see that there are some power sources that are the same but seem to go to a diferent pin on the computer... I am beggining to think the pins in the book are not really the pins on the computer... in any case it is getting to be to much for me... baring finding the correct wiring diagram pin for pin to the computer I am going to have to shelve the idea to get it going this year and opt for another set up in order to get the rail ready for the season... thanks for the help so far...

Try a Chiltons that includes your year car. The wiring diagrams in the one I used were good enough to wire my 3.1 MPFI conversion. I looked at them over for a while to become familiar with the wiring. It wasn't that difficult.

I'd recommend going to www.alldatadiy.com and buying a subscription for the donor car. Its $20 (about what you'd pay for a Chilton's) for the first car for a year. Each additional car (not that you'll need more) is $15/yr and renewal is $15/car/yr. But anyway, spend the $20 up front and I guarantee you'll find what you are looking for. If you are wondering what the diagrams from All-Data look like, goto the wiring diagrams part of the main site (under In Depth/Computer) and look at the 3100 PROM'd ECM diagrams. I've used these diagrams on several different projects and have never had any issues with them.

P.S. And if you do get the subscription, DL the diagrams and send them to me so I can put them up on the site for others to use later. I'm trying to get more people to do this so that we can build our diagram database!

I'm not saying Brad's idea isn't a good one but I didn't pay anything for the Chilton's I used...got it from the library.
