  • Has anyone tried to put the V8 N* into a Z34?

I was just wondering about this idea. I came across it on another forum and no one has answered it over there so i was wondering if it had ever been done or even if it was possible. Thanks

There was a guy that stuffed a 5.7L ASG into a Z34. Lost track of him though. From what I remember he had a LOT of problems with the swap and I dont remember if he finished.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

There is a guy putting an LS6 in a newer GTP (97-03 style) on Club GP, so if that can fit, I'm sure a N* would fit. Afterall, they fit them in Fieros!

That ASG motor sucks. It is throttle body fuel injection. It is not a go fast engine. It maybe makes a something over 200HP

Not quite. The stock Caddy 4.9 V8 uses port fuel injction (8 injectors), with the 2-barrel TB from the TBI (without the injector pod), but it is not TBI. Stock they are 200 HP, 250 HP with the Allante TPI intake. The ASG treatment is supposed to take it up over 300HP. Doesn't sound too bad to me.

The LS1 is a sweet engine, but much harder to swap in....the 4.9 is already a FWD engine.

The N* WILL NOT FIT. The tranny that is used on it is the 4T80-E, and it is a LOT bigger than the 4T60-E or the 4T65-E. Also, they are not interchangeable with the 4T80-E.

The N* is not only WIDER, but with it beind DOHC there is not enough room both in front, and in back. Also, the Exhast manifolds are REALLY weird on that engine. It goes DOWN the front, UNDER the oil pan, then up and OVER the tranny to meet in the back of the engine.

Basically, if you wanted to get a N* into a GEN 1 W-body, you would have to build a completly custom front end to the car.

The N* WILL fit into a GEN 2 W-body, but they get more room, and are wider (remember the widetrack grand prix anyone?).

As for the Caddy 4.9, it gets 200 HP, and 275 TQ. The ALLANTE 4.5 gets 200 HP, and 270 TQ. The Allante 4.5 is a PFI version of the 4.5 TBI (the Allante gets 8 injectors). It also uses the 4T60-E, so it is nothing that has to be done to get it to fit into a GEN 1 W-body other than dealing with mounts. If you do use the 4.9 with the stock computer, you will have to use the caddy tranny. The caddy, buick, and chevy 4T60-E's are not interchangeable.

for the ls-1, it has a different pattern on the tranny bellhousing making it not compatible with the 4t60e. there are kits from archie v8 that can adapt the bellhousing to fit a 350(not 100% but i think the ls-1 has the same bellhousing pattern as it's predecessors) me personally i would not think it would be wise unless you just cruised in it. that ls-1 would shred that 4t60e if driven hard.

i can't access the site right now for some reason but the N* can fit the 4t60e with a little modification. all the bellhousing bolts line up but 1 and it is only a few inches off. it has to be cut and welded and that tranny should fit the n*. give me a little while to verify this though. i can't open the links at chrfab.

as far as it fitting the car don't know about that the application i seen that had the n* was a widetrac gp i think.

The N* would be pretty cool to cramp into a w-body, but why not stay with a V6. The 3800 supercharged motor (L67) would be much easier to swap because it is smaller . Yes you would still have to have to figure out a way to get it in there but a few people have already done it, so it is doable. Another thing is the N* only puts out 200 HP, the L67 is running at 240 stock. Plus there is a large aftermarket for performance parts for L67.

Not quite. The N* (Northstar) is 275 or 300 HP....way more than the L67. You are thinking of the 4.9 pushrod V8.

the 4.9 is also a pushrod motor, correct? the n* is a DOHC motor. i am not a 100% but the last of the fwd N*, didn't it get up to 320 or 340?
i think the new rwd n* are 360

The old 4.9L was a Pushrod Motor Yes.

The advertised HP rating on the FWD Northstars have been 275-300HP. range, never over 300HP.

The newer RWD ones are only still 320 HP. (XLR, STS and SRX) - Escalade uses an LS style engine 6.0L HO, with 345HP.

Its not like this hasnt been discussed over 10x ( ) ..
But if I also remember correctly .. the steering shaft or something would interfere with it .. soccrplayrgtp or something dropped in the Northstar (alsmo made it RWD) .. just do a Search through the forums ..
