  • 3100/3400 top end in 3.1

hi I have a 91 rodeo with 250k on it. I am thinking about doing an engine swap, but I heard that a top end swap would be easier. Should I stick with the 3.1 block or upgrade to the 3.4? which 3x00 parts would work the best and what kind of hp/tq #'s would I be looking at?

Not the same motor man. When you say top end swap you are refering to 3.1L (Gen II) to 3X00 top end.

Your engine is GenI with iron heads and TBI. Your best option is to do the 3.4L GenI Camaro engine or Crate engine swap.

The genIII top end swap can be done, I have performed the build, along with at least one other RWD owner (sorry man, can never remember your name).

Let me ask you this first:

How good are you at fabrication, and on top of that, how much do you want to do?

if you get a 3.4l from a camaro, its a straight bolt in, just use your intake manifold and injection.

I am looking to get around 200 rwhp n/a. If this is going to be really complicated or I have to do a lot of fabricating, I have a donor LS1 that is good for almost twice that. I am just hoping to find bolt ons that will get me into that area.

Honestly, go for the LS1, while there would still be some fabricatin invloved, I'd surmise that it would be less than the aluminum head swap onto a RWD 660.

Check out www.domesticcrew.com/raven/James/ for pics of my build/swap, of a frankenstien 660, in an '85 GMC Jimmy.

I really dont want to put the LS1 in, its a work truck not a hotrod. I have already decided to go with the 3.4 block. Anyone know of a good head/cam/intake combo?

Stock heads are the best you can get. You can perform port work to make em better. Nothing is avalible aftermarket. TBI intakes are actually really good too. Do some casting cleaning with a die grinder and you will be set. Bolt on a 4.3L throttolebody to allow better air flow. You will have to bore out the manifold to 1 11/16"

The GM Crate engine cam, lifters, springs and retainers are some of the best parts to use. You can substitute the GM cam for a Crane/Comp 260 or 272 cam
