  • 3100/3400 into 92 Lumina w/ 3.1

First off how difficult is this swap? Has it even been done? I have a 92 Lumina Euro with a 3.1 + Auto . The tranny is starting to slip, and the engine just sucks. With my mom driving (who stays in the slow lane going 5mph under the limit and does 0-35 in 10 seconds) the P.O.S. only gets 20mpg at best. Engine only has about 80k on it (was replaced with a remanufactured engine when we bought it from the dealer in 9.

I plan on pulling a 3100 or 3400 + tranny from an 00'+ W-body... unless it is too much work... I need to be able to start this swap on a Friday morning and finish it Sunday night.

Otherwise I'll just be having the tranny rebuilt and live with a piece of crap engine.

Wow thats a mega tight time restraint. However I supose if you plan everything out to the letter it could be done.

But I wouldn't touch it unless I had a full week.

The swap has been done alot and you should be very pleased with the results.

You won't get much better than 20 with most 660s, but the power output of the 3400 and larger enignes is much more.

I averaged about 18mpg when my STE was stock, and with the topend and cam I get about 15. My sisters '93 3.1 GP gets about 20 or so. 20 is about right for a 660 in the city. Highway mileage should be better though, I got about 32mpg or so in my STE when it was stock. My dad gets about 30 in his TGP and my sisters GP is right around 30 as well. But for city or city/highway combined, 20 is about expected.

Well all I know is my Z34 is getting better mileage, 22 if it's all highway with no racing, if I lead foot it througha tank, I average about 16. The euro gets 20 if it's all highway, 15 around town. Plus, we rented a 2003 Impala LS (3400) a few years ago, with A/C and mostly highway miles we got 30mpg, city was about 25.

Yeah the 3400 is what... 185hp/200tq? Compared to 140hp/180tq I think? Plus better gas mileage, and probably quieter, more refined operation.

Also, which would be easier? 3100 or 3400? Probably the same as long as they're both out of W's?

The 3100 from a 94-95 car is the easiest, as the EGR will bolt right up. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter what engine you get. You will want a reprogrammed chip though to get the most from the new engine in there.
