  • 3.1 MPFI parts swapped to 2.8 TBI engine??

Project: 88 S-10 Blazer 2.8L TBI 4X4 slow turd. AKA, daily driver.

Donor: 90 Lumina 3.1L MPFI fast turd, leaks everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING. Plus tranny is toast but still drives.

Working on this on my friends CRX. DPFI DX Civic to MPFI SI Civic. Basically just swapping over intake, ECU, some extra wires, resisters, and a few other small parts.

Can anyone send me to a writeup for this project?

And please don't tell me what I should do or what I can do instead of this frankenstein. I'm not buying any other motor, or swapping whole 3.1 or so on. I have both vehicles and both run. Looking for a cheep quick swap (cuz I have bills to pay and 2 kids to feed) for a little more power for driving through the mountains and a little 4wheelen.

    Thanks,
    Jason

Swap the entire top end, wire up the MPFI computer, install the DIS. Deal with high compression, most likely want to retune the computer. Waste of time.

Yup you need to swap the whole top end heads and all. Compression will be in the 12's just so you know before hand.

Once you've done the swap along with all the wiring you will need to fabricate a crank position sensor to mount on the front balancer to run the DIS system. You will no longer be able to run a distributor because it will hit the intake manifold. A couple guys here have fabricated crank position sensors.

If you're looking for a quick swap, this is not the one.

        Nessisary fabricated parts:
Crank trigger (wheel and sensor bracket)
Exhaust headers/manifolds, due to different bolt spacing between genI and II
Throttle cable bracket, at least for the genIII top end swap I had to, but maybe due to the way the genII bracket and throttle body work together, you may not need to.

        Things to modify:
Wiring harness, probably best to start with the MPFI harness from the car, since you will end up adding a few wires anyway.
        Heater hoses/hard lines
Fuel system, MPFI runs on higher base pressure

I know I'm forgetting quite a few things, but that happens at 4 AM. LOL

That sucks. Its only gonna take about a day to do the same thing to the CRX. I was hoping my truck would be about the same.

you can do the mpfi swap on your motor, but the 3.1l stuff isnt going to work. you need to find an mpfi setup from a gen 1 ironhead motor. your best bet would be a 2.8l f body. you could use the 93-95 f body setup (its sfi fuel injection, going to be better than mpfi) but you have to be carful to get the stuff from a 5 speed car. the tranny they use is electronic, and if you use the ecm and its not hooked to the tranny, it put the ecm in limp mode.

the 2.8l f body stuff would be your cheapest and best bet. you would need from the lower intake up, ecm, wiring harness, and depending on were your accessories sit, you may need to grab some brackets for the powersteering and alternator (the tb may hit).

Ahh yes if you use F-Body 2.8L or 3.1L you will be able to keep your distributor and will not need to modify for DIS. But you will need to install the MPFI system.

The wife gave me the OK to mod it so I'm gonna go all the way. It is getting a 350 swap. I just recieved the 3" body lift in the mail yesterday. The light bar and brush gaurd should be here soon. The flowmaster got put on last week. The only reason I was gonna do the MPFI was cuz she didnt want me to spend any money on the truck.
