  • Please help!!!! this forum is my last hope

I have a 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport with the 3400 engine and a 4t60e transmission. They have high mileage and the transmission is starting to slip on me. I want to replace everything with newer equipment. I have found an engine and transmission from a 2002 monte carlo that is complete with computer. I know the engine is a 3400, but not sure which model the transmission is.

Will this swap be possible and/or what kind of modifications will need to be made? Am I just wasting my time? Any help would be Greatly Appreciated!!!

It will work fine. Then new Monte will used the 4T65E. I am not 100% sure about the electronics but I believe it is a direct bolt in.

Would a tranny rebuild not be more cost effective?

i dont think the 4t65e will just bolt in. you would need new half shafts and probably a custom mount. but the engine will bolt in, it will just have a different egr style than the 98, but you can solve that by using your old upper intake manifold

Did the case really change that much between the 2? I know the planetaries got beefed up alot.

There would also be electronic issues going from a 60E to the 65E. I'd be more worried about that than the fitment issues. But since we are talking about fitment, the 65E is definately beefier than the 60E, but it should be able to fit in the bay of a transport. I'd look into a tranny rebuild first cause the 65E will be more of a hassle than I think it would be worth.

Wow. I can't beleive I got this much info in such a short time. That's awesome, I've put post in several other forums and couldn't get any replies. I think that I will just have the tranny rebuilt and let the engine run until she just can't no more.
              Thanks again guys!!!!

I'd say still swap in the newer engine. Its a direct swap (with the exception of the plenum) and would go well with a rebuilt tranny. You can usually pick up low mileage 3400s for $3-500, so it'd be a good investment.

You couldn't use a 65 in place of a 60... the biggest problem being the electronics.. 65's are completely computer controled..

By 2002 GM had dropped the 60E, so the transmission will be a 65E...

On a second note the 65 isn't at all physicaly bigger then a 60...

how many miles on the 3400?? any problems with it? I can't see why you would want to change the motor just because of the miles.. these motors just keep going and going so long as you maintain them well..

The motor still runs good with 139000 on it. I just bought the van and appears that pennzoil has been used due to the sludge buildup on the valvetrain that I can see. Besides that, its just the usual cold start knock and the rear main oil leak. Anyone know of a good way to clean the inside of the engine? I'm real particular with my vehicles and like to keep them maintained as well as possible.

The sludge is more likely due to a past intake manifold leak. Penzoil would not be the cause of sludge. All brand name oil is comparable to one another. Run some seafoam trough the bitch and call it a day
