  • 94 Beretta 3400 engine swap

I'm looking to do the 3400 SFI engine Swap in my newly acquired 94 Beretta. If anyone has done this to their beretta I'm interested in hearing about their experiences and pitfalls to avoid. I assume the transmission will not need to be changed but would like to know for sure. I currently have a badly knocking 3100 sfi in it at the moment. Thanks cz-7a

I did it to a 94 Beretta in February. Put in a 01 (IIRC.. might be an 02) 3400 out of an Alero. The only problem I really ran into was the timing cover. The 3400 has a different belt configuration than our 3100, therefore there was a pulley boss sticking out and in the way of... something. So I pulled the timing cover off of my old engine and put it on the new engine. Then I had coolant leaking issues due to trying to re-use the old gasket. Then I had oil leakage issues due to not putting a gasket between the oil adapter and block.

One thing you will have to do is tap out the coolant pipe hole on the lower manifold (1/2"NPT tap) in order to screw the heater pipe into. The 3400s use a pressure fit tube, but the hole size is already perfect for the tap, so its very easy. Just make sure you get all the shavings out of the coolant passage.

Use your old fuel rail and injectors for the easiest swap. The injectors are perfect for the 3400, but you shouldn't lean them out. The 3400 injectors don't like to really play with the 3100 PCM, and the car will run bad unless you get the PCM programmed for the 3400 injectors.

Your tranny will bolt up no problem.

I think that's it... here is a link to the thread when I did mine:

Hi Brad, Thanks for the link. Did you have any problems with the computer after the swap as far as codes? How about the EGR valve? Did you need to mod anything for it? Thanks and looking forward to going with the 3400 swap.

I just blocked off my EGR for now, therefore I get that code every now and again. Someday I'll make an adapter and get the EGR mounted again... No other computer problems besides that though. There are several guys on here that make/sell EGR adapter plates for both 3400 plenum designs, so it'll be easy for you to overcome that issue.

Oh yeah... I just remembered some other things you might encounter. The 3400 heads don't have the temp sensor mounted in the head anymore, so you need to overcome that to maintain the temp guage. For a great writeup that pretty much covers the swap (even though its written for a 95 GA), check out the following PDF:

Have a copy of the swap guide which is very nice to have. I'm hoping that the EGR mod would incorporate usage of 3.4 vert. style plenum so it would not need changed. Found a nice 3.4 and hopefully will be purchasing it shortly. What would it take as far as programming to keep the 3.4 injectors? involvement? Costs?

Don't waste your money. Just use the 3100 injectors.

i just got an 02 3100 for my 94 achieva. found that i need to swap coolant temp sensor in the lower intake and use my old O2 sensor. so far, the timing covers look exactly alike, but i'm going from old 3100 to new 3100. also, my thermostat housing was fitted with a steel line that went to my overflow tank. i had previously plugged it, but thinking of putting the temp sensor for the gauge there.

Why not switch to the 3-wire temp sensor for the new 3100?

not switching PCMs, don't have the connector for the harness, not a wiring guru, engine is probably going in this weekend, etc.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to switch PCM's, but I guess it's all a moot point if you don't even have the connector.

I did that conversion on my '95 "just because". I like getting my gage reading from the same place the ecm does. Very easy to do.
