  • 3.1L Gen II LH0 (VIN T) Swap!

    Hi guys,

This is my first post here...

I have a '91 Regal with a 3.1L Gen II engine. I have only 30,000 miles on it. 2 years ago I installed a superchip. Anyway, I have a few questions:

What engines would I be able to swap to?
Would I need to reprogram the computer, or get a new chip altogether?
Can someone give me a ballpark estimate as to how much this should cost?

    Thanks in advance,

    Eric

i personally, since its so low miles, would opt to find a turbo grand prix turbocharger setup and computer chip.

You could swap to pretty much any FWD engine in the 6/60 engine family, including 2.8 OHV, 3.4 DOHC, 3100 SFI OHV, 3400 SFI OHV (Might be the best choice), and then there are the *90 degree engines. Both the L36 and L67 (N/a and supercharged 3.8 V6s) can fit, but basically anything newer than 1996 will have problems with OBD II, and you will probably have to get some computer work done. The 3400 SFI OHV would be a good choice because it is a reliable engine with decent power (185 hp), and it is available in many vehicles (Chevy Malibu (older body style N body) Venture, base Impalas, Grand Am and Aleros, and all of the GM Minivans. However, 3400 SFIs are OBDII, so you would probably have to make a custom chip.
Or, if you have $9600, you could buy a complete 5.0 ASG engine, including a new transmission. 285 hp Cadillac V8, setup for FWD.

with the 3100 and 3400, you can put in stock injectors and wiring from your 3.1l and it will run off the stock ecm with whatever chip is in it.
