  • Water Pump Dimensions

Okay, need a little help here. This is my first post and if I am in the wrong area for this question someone please redirect me. I have transplanted a 1986 2.8 and 904 trans from a Jeep Cherokee into a 1960 Willys CJ5. I left the transfer case in the stock location for drive shaft purposes. I need to know the shortest water pump accessory belt set up because I am out of room for a radiator. My engine came with the long snout WP. It looks like the one from a Camaro 2.8 is shorter. What about FWD? They look very flat. What do you guys think how can I get some more room?

I think you'll be in for some work whatever way you go.

The shorter F-body water pump is only available in a reverse rotation design, as far as I know, and requires a serpentine belt system, which means changing everything on the front of the engine.

The FWD set-up may or may not work, the water passage passes above the timing chain area and may interfere with the intake manifold. The FWD (gen2 and 3) are the shortest accessory drive available, but may be the most difficult to make work in a longitudinal layout, due to actual placement of the water pump, which is also a reverse rotation pump.

Is it possible to move the drivetrain back? I would do that before trying to make a possible red herring of a belt drive system work. making new driveshafts is at many times easier to make or get made than modifying other systems.

Yeah i thought about the drive shafts, but the rear shaft is only 13inches now and I put 3 inch lift springs on it. I don't think any shorter shaft would be safe? I found this thread and about half way down was a picture of what I'm thinking. http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?40,1951241

Interesting solution, that idler pulley mount.

Although the author, does have some information incorrect.

You also can not use "any front cover" on any of the 60 degree V6. The 1985 and earlier used a different flange for the oil pan, and can not be used with the later oil pan. This is especially true when a gen3 block is used, since the gen3 blocks require a gen3 oil pan, which only have the later oil pan flange. Not that this really concerns you specifically, the gen3 stuff I mean, but you do need to make sure that you have an oil pan with the matching shape at the front cover section.

If you look in one of the linked threads from that post (http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php...83#msg-1847183), you can see the different timing cover shapes at the oil pan.

It also looks like there might have been a shorter water pump for the forward rotation pump, but would likely be difficult to find the correct pulley, since it would have been an early to mid '80s use, talking about 30 years old now, most of those cars would likely be long gone by now.

All V6 Fieros have a clockwise rotation pump with a short snout. They use a 5-rib pulley and their belt setup uses a v-belt for A/C.

Fieros are common enough that it shouldn't be difficult to get the pulley.

Agreed a Fiero accessory drive should work out well. It is as short as a Camaro setup and uses a forward rotation pump that will bolt to the old style cover. It wont support A/C and Power steering though. But the serp belt setup is way more reliable than a V-Belt setup.

The Fiero setup uses a V-belt for A/C. The way the stock alternator mount is placed is known to cause belt squeal problems as well. So something to consider if you're thinking about running the alt mount too.

This is a Fiero water pump with a smooth pulley installed to use with a 6-rib belt. Never had any issues running the smooth pulley.

Raven, good info on the oil pan and timing cover. Geoffinbc I like that set up, but I am running power steering. Caffeine is that a standard setup you are showing or a custom one built from a fiero stuff?

It was made for a S10 to power a Fiero water pump, 94 Sunbird alternator, 2.5 S10 power steering pump, 3500 tensioner, and Ford 3.8 supercharger

All other things aside lol you should be able to simply unbolt your water pump and bolt on a Fiero water pump. Leave everything else the same.

You can either try to find a 6-rib pulley or do what we did and just run a smooth 87+ F-body/3x00 pulley. Some people say the belt might wear faster with the ribs contacting a smooth pulley but we never experienced this.

Well you could slap on a power steering pump with an S-10 mount. You may just need to add an idler in the mix to get the belt wrap you need around the pump. The belt setup I showed can squeal but rodney dickman sells and idler kit to add some belt wrap.
