  • Swapping a 3.4 for 3.1, 1996 grand prix

Looking for any articles or posts on doing this swap.

Just so I make sure I understand, you current have a 3.4 (assume its a 3400), and want to swap in a 3.1 (again, assuming its a 3100)? You mention 1996, but can we get an idea of what car we are talking about? That would help a lot with trying to get you some info.

Uh... the name of the thread has 96 Grand Prix in it... Did he edit the title?

and to me since the GP base had a 3100, I assume he's wantin' a 3400.

This isn't for a 96 GP, but it is still a helpful guide for going from a small port 3100 to a 3400.

Hi Brad, I am replacing the 3.4L DOHC (POS) in a 1996 Grand Prix SE with a 3100. I have the 3.4L out (last night), what a frustrating removal out the top. When you have to remove a CV joint to remove the alternator, that is ridiculous! The engineer should be sent back to school! Anyways, it looks like I will have to replace the wiring harness from the firewall forward. I have been told I can use the same computer?? After that the next hurdle will be the A/C compressor. I have changed out quite few 3100's on this generation of Grand Prix. I like the GTP's but really dislike the 3.4L DOHC, just a pain to work on. If this goes well, I plan on doing more of these swaps on GTP's. Any help would be appreciated!

There was someone on here who did that same swap a couple years ago. Can't remember who right now, but the documented it all on the site. If I can remember who, and find the thread, I'll post a link.

And here is the actual swap thread (once I started looking through the first one, realized it wasn't the actual swap thread). He put in a 3500 (LX9), but for the most part, everything should be relatively similar.
