  • 04 3400 interchange?

    I tried searching, but wasn't able to come up with a definitive answer to my question.

    I picked up an 04 Grand AM with the 3400, it needs a new engine, as the block is cracked because the previous owner used water instead of antifreeze.

    On my local craigslist, I've found a 99 3400 out of an Olds Silouhette van, will this engine work or not. Changing parts between blocks would not be a big deal since I'm going to rebuild the motor before it goes into the car.

    Yes, it will work, but the cam sensor will have to be swapped between engines. There was a change in the cam as well, but it seems in most cases people can get away with just a sensor swap. If you're tearing down both engines, then you can just swap the newer cam into the older block as well, and not have to worry.

    Other small differences include the rocker bolt thread size, it's 10mm on the older engine and 8mm on the newer, so make sure you use the matching rockers to the heads. I believe the EGR system also changed, but this should only require using the newer UIM (Upper Intake Manifold).

      You should swap the injectors and fuel rail too. They went to hi-flow injectors and higher fuel pressure in around 2000-01.
      Make sure the pulley arrangement is the same. I had to change the timing chain cover (looked the same----but missing 1 boss and bolt hole).
      This was a 2002 Impala--3400 into a broken 1997 Malibu (3100)

          Ok guys, the 99 was sold before I was able to pick it up, but I found a 2000 3400 that I went ahead and picked up. I'm assuming that since the 99 would have worked with a few parts swaps, that the 2000 will also work. Do you think I still need to swap the fuel rail over to the 2000 block? Also on a side note, I found out that someone has already swapped engines before I picked it up. The engine I pulled out of it is from the 2003 model year per the partial vin# stamped into the block.

          Since I'm tearing both motors down, I will swap the front cover's just in case, the upper intake manifold for the EGR, and the fuel rails if needed. Now about the camshaft, when did they change it, and what changes did they make to it? Higher lift? more duration? I cant seem to find any specs on the cam other than lift, and my sources put the cam lift at .2727" for both the 03 and the 00 engines I have. Thanks again!

            The specs remained the same, the difference is in the tone ring or reluctor "tooth" whatever you want to call it. There are 3 that I know of, on eis a single tooth that is about 10 to 15 degrees of rotation, another is a notch, that is also about 10 to 15 degrees of rotation, and the other is a 180* tooth or notch depending on how you view it.

              You should be golden
              The camshaft change was to a single tooth pickup (cam position). My '97 ecu didn't care, worked just fine.

                Thanks guys, this swap should be a fairly straight forward deal now. The motor I picked up has about 138k on the clock so it shouldn't be too bad inside. I will see when I get it opened up. Then off to order a rebuild kit.

                Has anyone had problems with the new intake gaskets going bad or did the redesign fix this problem for good?

                  Go with the metal Fel-Pro, about 80 bones------but worth it. Seal the crap out of the oil pump shaft cover thing (looks like a distributor elimination plug), they like to leak.

                    I had to change a cam in a 98 minivan a few years ago and got a stock 3500 cam for free for it. The van didn't care about the different ring and runs just fine, just like Hofferwood.
