  • Ticking

My 3400 had a cracked block, I assumed gasket at first, after the second set of gaskets and putting it together the second time, it started ticking, didn't really look into it as the oil/coolant and overheat were more important. Took it back apart and found a crack in the cylinder wall. Got an engine with 100k from salvage, put it in and it ticks/click as well. No more oil/coolant mixing though. The Ticks sound like something hitting the valve cover maybe. The other rocker arms in the engine I took out were firmly in place though, and rods tight. I am using different rocker arms and rods, so I do not think that to be the cause. I am finding on the internet with videos of the exact same sound as mine that people constantly argue over it being a sticking valve, rocker arm pulling out of the head, and exhaust leak at the manifold. The Tick is RPM sensitive, it gets faster and louder with the more gas given. How can I find out what this is? I tried taking the belt off and it still made the noise.
I made video of my problem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9_aT...ature=youtu.be

My injectors tick pretty loudly. Could it be them?

In response to your comments, yeah the lifter is making that noise because its bouncing off the lobe on the cam... there is nothing there to push it back down on to the base circle so it will continuously tap off the lobe as it comes back around. with the rocker properly in place and the pushrod in there the sound should go away.

That is exactly the problem! Thank you good sir. But what about the engine dieing when I take the oil fill cap off? Is that a side effect of the bad lifter? After taking the valve cover off it was the exhaust rod for cylinder 6.

That has something to do with the EVAP and/or PCV system not working quite right... I'm not sure 100% on why it's doing that but I do remember one car I worked on would idle really erratic when the oil cap was removed.

It runs fine with the oil cap on, so I don't think I will worry about it. I have another set of everything top end for this engine here seeing as I had a cracked block and ordered a salvage engine, they sent everything still on the engine less an alternator, so maybe I will switch out the EVAP and PCV when this rocker arm is on and working. I think it might be the LIM gasket though, I suppose we will see if I burn oil, right?

When you remove your oil cap your causing a vacuum leak because the pcv system will suck air through the filler hole rather than getting metered air from behind the maf sensor.

It never used to do that. It used to run fine when I removed the oil cap, it would suck air, but run fine.

at idle, a stuck open PCV valve will cause that.

I will try swapping it Saturday and see how that works.
