My 3400 had a cracked block, I assumed gasket at first, after the second set of gaskets and putting it together the second time, it started ticking, didn't really look into it as the oil/coolant and overheat were more important. Took it back apart and found a crack in the cylinder wall. Got an engine with 100k from salvage, put it in and it ticks/click as well. No more oil/coolant mixing though. The Ticks sound like something hitting the valve cover maybe. The other rocker arms in the engine I took out were firmly in place though, and rods tight. I am using different rocker arms and rods, so I do not think that to be the cause. I am finding on the internet with videos of the exact same sound as mine that people constantly argue over it being a sticking valve, rocker arm pulling out of the head, and exhaust leak at the manifold. The Tick is RPM sensitive, it gets faster and louder with the more gas given. How can I find out what this is? I tried taking the belt off and it still made the noise.
