howdy everyone, new here......anyhow i have a p1800 volvo and i want a v6....so without doing any research i bought a 87 2.8 out of a s 10 chevy with a 200 trans. well i want to run a carb, so has anyone done this conversion? i also need to go v belt not the serpentine so i need to know if there is a water pump i can change over to? thanks ahead of time for any info

Some years had v belts on them, I would be far more worried that God will punish you severely for defacing such a beautiful little car after you die. Larry

86 and earlier engines should have a V-belt setup. Just make sure to get an 86- oil pan, timing cover and water pump as well or an 87-88 Fiero timing cover so you are turning the water pump the right direction.

You will be in good shape. I have a water pump pulley and a crank pulley from an S-10 sitting here, they have two V belt grooves to the rear and a narrow surpentine to the front of them. If you don't have ones like this you can have these. A TBI intake should be an easy mod to a carb, and there are lots of other parts that will fit. Keep in mind that there are several different timing covers for these engines depending on the oil pan and the rotation of the water pump. I think there are some intakes that had a carb on them, but when the engine/trans combo was mounted in an S-10 it had quite a slope to the rear, so the carb mount is on an angle to keep the carb level. You could easily mill it flat. Good luck, bet that will be a nice little car. Larry

Use a factory 2bbl carb intake or grab an Edelbrock one or the very rare Offy manifold. If you want all V belts then get an 82-85 front cover and pump with matching oil pan and your in business. You can also use an 86 (crate engine) front cover which uses a standard rotation pump but a later model oil pan gasket which is a better gasket design. All 87 and later covers use a reverse rotation front cover and pump with serpentine belts. I highly suggest you make the effort to use a serpentine belt. It is much more reliable, the mounts are aluminum, more rigid and lighter for all the accessories. It is also much easier to service the belt or remove it for service of other items. It will also run quieter and more efficiently.

Well the serpentine belt will be closer to the engine. There are several accessory setups to choose from as well from F-bodies and S10s. You will also never have to worry about belt squeal which is really nice.

I f you have a length issue you can go with a Fiero belt and pump setup and save about 3 inches in length. Larry

The fiero belt setup is pretty prone to belt squeal. If you want something simple and compact, the accessory setup on my 3500 is just that. S10/F-body 2.8 power steering bracket and crank pulley, CCW (87+) water pump and V6 J-body alternator with custom mount brackets. The alternator mount brackets are super simple to make if you have a welder.

Also, you can easily under drive the RWD CCW water pumps a little by putting on a FWD pulley.

MAYBE if it's an F-body water pump, but all other RWD water pumps will not accept a FWD water pump pulley.

It will fit on an F-body pump; I use a FWD pulley on my Firebird. I guess it wouldn't work with an S-10 pump because the snout sticks out further but its easy to swap out the S-10 pump for an F-body one anyway.
