I Have a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera daily driver which doesn't anymore.
Naturally, this happened less than 100 miles after I got it back on the road.
The original 2.8 apparently had something let go in the bottom end after clocking just over 314,000 km or 196,250 mi.
The advice I'm seeking is:
1) Should I buy a $250. replacement 2.8 from the local scrapyard?
Since I've no place to do the swap myself, I'll be paying someone to do it. The first guy I checked with said the book gives 13 hours for the job.
2) Should I look for a newer motor such as a 3100, 3400, or 3500?
I,m assuming in that case, I'd have to swap more than the engine.
The same junkyard quoted me more like $750. for a motor/transmission/wire harness/computer combo.
The book that the first mechanic consulted didn't give any time estimate for such a swap. However, it did quote 12 1/2 hours for a 3.8 to 3.8 swap(1/2 hr. less than the 2.8 to 2.8 swap).
