Hello all, new to the forum. Read a lot of great information here over the years. I have acquired a bottom end new motor from a pontiac fiero maclaren model from a defunct dealership. My heads off my 1989 2.8l vin W engine beretta have small crack between the valves on both heads. I was looking at putting a newer head from a 95 beretta or lumina and a 3400 tbi? Has anyone done this or do you know if the casting numbers 170 or 487 work? I know I have to change the intakes and exhaust headers to the newer d style. Also someone was talking about a newer head gasket on 93 or newer I think that is skinnier to increase compression ratio and the newer 1.6 rocker arms. There are some great junk yards here in salt lake I can acquire the parts. Thanks in advance for your replies and first hand experience. Jason

pontiac fiero maclaren model does not ring a bell for me. grand prix? The flat tappet stuff isn't in much demand any more with the change in oil properties as of late, and the information on the TGP stuff doesn't make it any better than a stock 3400 engine that I am aware of.
Small port heads and manifolds are the worst gen 3 upgrade you can get. 170 and 487 are large port heads, and ideal. Get 10mm rockers, 03-05 for sure are 8mm, some later 02 are as well. You want the 3400 throttle body at least.
What vehicle is this going in?Ben

Yes you are correct. It was a maclaren model engine for the grand prix. Supposed to have a beefed up crank for turbocharging and a few minor differences. Got the whole bottom end for 450 bucks and its all new. But it didn't come with heads and thats when I got to thinking about all this swapping stuff. It's going in a 1989 chevy beretta which was gen 11 I believe and all the old 2.8 junk intake and exhaust. I know flat tappet lifters are ancient, don't mind throwing a pint of comp cams break in lube every oil change. Figured converting to roller cam and lifters would be a major pain. Still looking at options. Thanks for the replies.Last edited by flyin2low; 01-14-2012, 01:52 AM.
