  • 2.8 build up

    Hey Guys,

I'm fairly new to 60 V6's and I'm in the planning process of a 2.8 build up. I've got a couple of questions to ask.

    1. Were there any 2.8's w/ Alu. heads?
    2. What is the difference between the Gen II and Gen III heads(performance wise)?
    3. Gen II and III are interchangeable right? No need to switch things?

    Thanks!

    1. There were FWD versions of the 2.8 (GenII) from 1987-1989 that used aluminium heads.
    2. The GenIII flows much better than GenII.
    3. Not really. http://www.60degreev6.com/index.php?p=pages&pid=181

    What do you have, anyway?

Right now, only a few parts and a plan!

I have a 2.8 & 5spd from an S-10, and I want to upgrade to the 3100 crank, rods, pistons, Gen III heads & intake. It's a later block with the bigger bearings and one-piece main seal. I plan on keeping the distributor, so I'll have to solve a clearance problem there(I think), but that's down the road.

I have a Megasquirt system to run the EFI and I'm going to throw it all in to a Lotus 7 replica chassis. Think 1400lbs and hopefully 200+hp and you get the idea!

Is this for the Stalker kit? I love those! Maybe I'll get around to getting one eventually.

Fitting the distributor in with the newer intake mani is gonna be a problem. I don't know exactly how much modification would be needed if it could be done at all, I don't have a Gen3 top end handy. Plus my 2.8 is about 200 miles away right now...

Is the Megasquirt & Spark (or whatever they call it) available yet? The stock DIS is pretty powerful.

This is for a 'Locost' (home made chassis based on the book 'Build your own car for 250 Pounds'), and is roughly the same thing as a Stalker V6. That's where I got the idea to use the 2.8 cuz' I already owned it!

There are several options to have Megasquirt control the ingition timing, but I'm a bit of a budget...so the stock ignition will have to do for now. Megasquirt won't control coil packs, and the only other way to avoid a distributor is to rig up some crank-sensor fired unit using some Ford ingnition module. I wasn't interested in it, so I never really looked. If it comes down to it, I'll have to make my own intake.

As a side note...They have added 2 different Stalker frames now. Both use the 3800 motor and come with all the stuff to convert them to RWD. One is for the N/A engine and the other is for the supercharged one! With their modified ECU and headers, they figure around 260 or 280hp and 300ft-lbs of torque for the S/C version!

Eh? the original stalker was a 60v6 setup... did they drop that in favor of the 90v6 3800 NA? I hope not...

I did see that they now offer an L67 (3800SC) version.

They still offer the 60V6 setup...I think the frames are all the same, just the engine mounts differ, and if you get the 3800 (either N/A or SC) you get a taller 'hood' to clear the additional height.

If I had a scanner that would run with my laptop or a digicam, I'd show you exactly how much modification is needed to use a distributer in the stock location with the genIII intake, to put it in words, you'd need to rebuild both the upper and lower intake manifolds. To simply cut and fill the #6 runner, would completly block that runner.
