  • 96 Corsica 3100 into a 95 Z26 3100

I have a 95 Z26 with the 3100,it is knocking badly because of the dreaded LIM gasket, changed it,but i guess it was to late.
I found on craigslist a 3100 out of a 96 Corsica, what if anything will have to be swapped to make my car run again? I know for a fact my EGR is different.the plug is different. The owner of the corsica was T-boned and he cut the car in half and has disposed of the rear section, still has the front half,he is giving me the tranny also,a new radiator, which I have found are different part number then mine, new Alternator which is same part number.
He pulled the engine and tranny and then got bored and had target practice on the PCM.will I need a PCM from a 96 corsica with the 3100? I have read that my 95 has pivot rockers, the 96 I believe has roller rockers. Will this pose a problem with my PCM if I can even use it. My pcm is OBD 1.5 I believe where as the 96 is OBD 2.
Thanks for any and all replys, would like to know before Saturday,as that is when I am to pick up the 96 3100.

First off, welcome to the site!

The only things I can think of that may be an issue would be the heater connection to the lower intake and then the EGR as you stated. But, since you have both engines, you should be able to mix and match parts as needed to make it work. The heater connection may not be different (can't remember when it changed), in which case you would just have to swap the upper plenum between engines to maintain your EGR.

Other than that, you don't need to worry about any of your other concerns. The PCM will run the new engine just fine, and the roller rockers have no effect on anything, other than just being more efficient. Trannies will be the same, so if there are no issues with your current, there is no reason to go with the other one.

Thanks for the welcome bszopi.and thanks for the info.do you know if the new radiator he is giving me will fit? I checked on rockauto and the 96 and 95 are 2 different part #'s. great to hear the 96 3100 will work without needing a 96 PCM. UIM is no problem, also read that I will need to splice my temp sensor since the 96 has only 1,and my 95 has 2.
also keeping my tranny would be the better option as it has 30,000 miles less.
My car has 99,975 miles and the 96 has 131,600,he showed me the cluster,I pulled the dipstick and it had know signs of water in there, anything else i can give a quick look for trouble.
He is letting the engine, tranny, new radiator, new alternator, and what ever else i may possibly need for 250.00
wiper motor? power brake booster? ABS stuff.

Got the engine on friday 8/5/11. started tearing into it and taking the tranny off,I will leave mine in and just change engines.got the UIM off and noticed the 96 has a heated throttlebody,is there any reason not to use mine and just CAP the cooling lines going to the throttlebody? or should i just go with the heated throttlebody? TIA.

It runs super, only problems I have are needs a oil pressure sending unit, mine broke and I J.B welded it but I guess it is internal.
coolant temp sensor, reads way past H all the time,I tied it into a threaded drain plug in the rear of the block, but guess the sensor itself is bad,had problems with it before I changed engines.

other then those 2 things,I am happy, will never change another FWD engine in this lifetime or the next.there is just no room, for my hands let alone tools, have airtools, they are useless on this car.

Glad to have my Z26 back after it sat for 7 years, picked it up for 600.00.

Update,I put about 300 miles on the car since the engine replacement,I should have done it years ago,I let it sit or at least 7 years.both rear steel brakelines are toast.front brake rotors and brakes need replacement.oil pressure sending unit started working the other day on it's own.coolant temp sensor read correct for a total of 5 seconds.I currently have it unplugged,I prefer to have it read COLD then way past HOT.I know it don't run hot, only heard the cooling fan come on once, and it was 100 degrees at the time.guess i will install a new cooling temp sending unit.only 15.00 at the auto parts store.Does anyone know if I can relocate the cooling temp sensor for the gauge to the front of the engine? I do remember seeing a drain plug just like the one in the rear.the rear drain is a real bitch to get to,the front one would be easier to replace.TIA.

Glad it runs! everything else is a cakewalk! Just go with the 96 3-wire coolant temp sensor. Go to the yard and find a 96 corsica/beretta and cut the pigtail off, the wires should be the same color as whats wired into your 2 sensors now. The plug on the front should be for the coolant but dont qoute me, just unscrew it real slow and see if coolant or oil starts to weep out.

I have the 3-wire coolant temp sensor and pigtail from the 96.I just changed injector harness with my 2 wire coolant temp before the swap.the 96 injector harness had bare wires under the plenum,I would think the 96 had injector problems at 1 time and the previous owner was poking around with a test light and pierced the insulation on the injector.one injector wire was so bad that the 96 was only running on 5 injectors.

I decided to just buy the 2 wire temp sensor, then everything will be plug and play,no splicing of wires needed. Thanks for the reply. P.S what part of Pa.you from Daguse5853Z? I lived up in Pa. for 40 years before relocating to Tn.in 2006.
