  • 2.8/3.4 Engine Swap Flywheel

    I had a 2.8 installed in my '49 Chevy pickup, but it spun a rod bearing (surprise!), so I bought a 3.4 crate motor to replace it.

    The swap was going well, until I came to the flywheel. The original flywheel and bell housing, which I bought at a swap meet, were supposed to be from an S10, but when I took the old engine apart, it must be from a Camaro (Casting #14033181).

    I had already bought a internally balanced flywheel for an S10 (Casting #14046567) but it is much thinner than the old flywheel.

    I am thinking that I need an internally balanced Camaro flywheel (Casting #14100560), but I see it listed for both internally and externally balanced engines. Is this the flywheel I need? Is it for an internally balanced engine? Will it be the same thickness as the old 14033181?

    You can't match the old flywheel to the new except make sure it's neutrally balanced? I believe it also depends on your transmission if it's a manual tranny as at some point the thickness of the flywheel on the rear wheel drive S10 trucks was as thin as that found on the front wheel drive cars.

    Otherwise you should look for a flywheel for the 94-95 Camaro Firebird provided the tranny input splines are at the same location which from what you describe appears to be the case unless ofcourse it's an automatic. The 94-95 Camaro/Bird flywheel is about 1.73" thick and that for the fwd cars and probably the one you have is about .840".

      The Camaro flywheel has a big dish on the back side. The S-10 flywheel is flat.

      Can you get some pics of the old flywheel?

        Sounds like his situation is contrary to that. The input shaft location on the tranny (or bellhousing) determines which flywheel he'll need since the iron head motors have the same bolt pattern and crankshaft flange location.

        Sounds like the same scenario we have with the F40 6 spd vs. the 5 spd, the input shaft splines and shaft depth in the transmission changed.

          I would like to keep my existing bellhousing and Borg Warner 5-speed transmission.

          I tried to upload pictures of the old externally balanced flywheel, but they files wouldn't upload to the website for some reason.

          The flywheel does have a dish on the back side, and an external balance weight, and is 1.54" thick.

          Does the '88 Camaro 2.8 internally balanced flywheel (Casting #14100560) have the same or similar thickness?

            Where is your slave cylinder located? The S10 bellhousing has the slave next to the transmission while the Camaro unit has the slave mounted low with the hose end towards the front of the car.

            I believe the splines are long enough to allow using either flywheel/clutch setup. The problem is with the release fork and TO bearing location with the shorter flywheel. Some people have made extensions for the pivot ball to use the shorter flywheel with the Camaro BH.

              Yes on the thickness, sounds like yours may have been resurfaced as the one I measured was about 1.7" thick, flange to friction surface.

                My clutch is not hydraulic as it is an '82.
                I may look into extending the pivot ball if I can't use the '88 flywheel.

                  Thanks, I think that is close enough to fit.

                  I will swap my '88 S10 flywheel for an '88 Camaro unit.

                    I was measuring the thickness of the edge of the flywheel.

                    I remeasured from the flange to the friction surface and my flywheel is 1.7" thick.

                      Yup if your original has a dish on the back side then it is a Camaro Flywheel. So just buy an 88 flywheel from a 2.8L Camaro.
