  • 3.1 MPFI to 3.4 DOHC Swap 1992 Grand Prix

I am new to the thread, I just purchased a 1992 Grand Prix with the 3.1 MPFI motor that runs for $400 today. The car has rather high mileage (188K) so I was thinking of swapping to a 3.4l DOHC that was optional that year.

I found a 3.4l DOHC (LQ1) new crate engine for $350 + $150 shipping and I am thinking 'what the hell? Why not?'

So before I go to far and hang myself I would like to know what I am in for with this swap and everything I am going to need. I have found a few sites with very detailed walkthroughs on what they did with pictures taken along the way, but none with the 3.4l LQ1. They have all been for the 3400 SFI.

So i just basically was hoping I could get some input from someone who has actually done this swap before on what parts from my 3.1 are interchangeable and which aren't, what intake manifolds to use, what new parts I am going to have to buy/fabricate. let me know guys. Thanks a ton.

A 3X00 swap would be a wiser decision. More parts available plus it is a cheaper, stronger more reliable motor. It is still used today and is a much more popular motor so replacement parts are easy and cheap to come by.
