ive done it both ways w/ trans.

remove your AC pressure sensor on the LH frame rail and you will be OK to pull it out the top.

          yes.

both cars i did were auto. its easier to me to pull everything and swap the trans on the floor in front of me, but thats up to you. i did my 94 lumina from the bottom, and a 90 GP thru the top(3.1-3.4 swaps in both cases)

Saw this too late-but I took my 3.4/5M out the top. I disconnected the AC from the belt drive, but left it in the bay with the lines hooked up. Basically I had to strip everything off the motor in order to get it out, even the exhaust manis.

Did you leave the brake master cylinder in place?

I had to unbolt it, then move it. So I used bailing wire to hold it out of the way, becuz the tranny wouldn't clear it. I left the lines attached like I did with the AC, but it had to be pushed a little.

I pretty much stripped the motor while it was in the car just to make things easy, and the crap had to come off anyway. So when I had an hour or two after school, I'd pull as much as I could, and in a week, the motor was pretty much a bare long block with the tranny.
