  • ironing out kinks after a swap.

Been a while since Ive been here, Not sure if anyone remembers, my last time was inquireing about swapping out a 3.1L FI for my lumina.

Well Good news is, I got the car running and on the road, got an engine from an old 93 cavilier.

Bad news is, it isnt running perfectly yet.

My main problems are heasitation when giving it gas from idle, and cooling issues.

    Trying to resolve the problems.

    1. cooling
I have changed out cooling hoses, repaired one cooling leak, changed the thermostat, and then noticed the rad fans dont come on... even if the egine temp light kicks in. If I unplug the coolant temperature sensor by the t-stat the fans will run continuously (with the service engine soon light on) so i figured that was the culprit and replaced it. Still the same thing, temp light will come on and no fans, I checked fuses and relays, and the individual motors. Also the fans wont switch on if I turn on the AC (I thought at least one was supposed to kick in to cool the refridgerant) So this one has me puzzled to all hell. I also pulled and checked the temp sending unit, but that seems to also be working, I have voltage and ground at both sensors.

    2. tranny
The tranny was also slipping a bit. SO I dropped the pan, changed the fluid and filter, new seal etc. Seems to be running a bit better doesnt slip as much. I also saw that the air breather isnt connected to the intake vac, I missed it, because the port on the intake of the new engine was sealed off (different tranny in the old car) so parts removed from the old engine and ready to install that. see if that clears up the slipping.
the old tranny fluid was dark and smelled burnt so Im suspecting tranny overheated. at one point, or the fluid was very rarely changed.

    3. engine heasitation and uneaven idle
Im figuring vacuum leak, So far I changed the spark plugs, putting in new cables tonight, picked up a canister purge solenoid at the wreaker, (was also hearing a hissing under the car no fluid leaks where the sound was coming from so I figured vacuum and a bad solenoid) After thats done, I will see how shes running.

    4. Oil leak.
Just started the other day. Ive been running the engine every day for about a month trying to find and iron out bugs, but only driving it since friday. Now there is oil leaking. It is coming from the rear side of the oil pan, near the front of the engine, (opposite the drain bolt) I cant seem to see anything leaking from behind the rear manifold. I cant figure it out.

This car is going to be the death of me.
