  • 2.8 HO heads on which 3.1?

    I am planning to put a 3.1L in my 88 Fiero GT.
    I have the 2.8 HO iron heads which I would like
    to use.

    I am planning to visit the junkyards and get a low
    miles 3.1 shorblock for these heads.

    I know the early 90's minivan 3.1 had iron heads.

    What I am wondering is if the aluminum head car
    3.1 blocks will accept the L44 HO iron heads.

    Would it just be easier to use the 3.1 crank with the 2.8
    block?

    Either heads will bolt up to any block, past or present.

      So should I use the pistons that were in the 3.1 or use 2.8 pistons?
      (assuming I don't want extremely high or low compression)
      1986 Fiero GT automatic

        If the 3.1 is originally an iron head engine, use its pistons. In fact, use the iron heads as well, as they are the same as the Fiero HO heads.

        If the 3.1 is aluminum head, you will need to find some 3.1 iron head pistons, as neither the 2.8 iron head nor 3.1 aluminum head pistons will work right.

        My advice? Find a decent used Camaro 3.4, which will have the same iron heads, and give you a little more displacement. Other than having to redrill the starter holes, it pretty much drops right in.
