  • Swapping out a 3.1 L multi port FI

Im currently trying to swap out the engine from my car. Car is a 93 chevy lumina with a 3.1L Multi port Fuel injected engine. I have never done an engine swap on a FWD before and and just getting frustrated. :s

So far I have the hood removed all of the hoses disconnected, throttle cables from the trottle body off, currently taking off the master cylinder to allow transaxel clearance.

So Im not sure what Im putting in the car yet, maybe another 3.1, but I will be searching out a car to use as a donor. I have a few questions regarding.

Because I will have to pull the trans with the engine, is there any issue with dropping in the trans from the donor car, or would the transaxel in say a grand prix with the same engine mount differently? or would it be the same.

also I was wondering what other engines would be drop in compatible with this car.

Also If anyone has some tips for pulling the engine that would be great the haynes manual reads like stereo instructions. and seems to contradict itself on what I have to do with the tranny when taking it out.

    Thank you in advance.

Is there a specific reason you are taking the tranny out? In a W-body, you have plenty of clearance to disconnect the engine from the tranny and just pull the engine.

By the way, welcome to the site!

what about the bolts on the underside? Can I access them from under the car, I would have thought the frame would be in the way.

If I can pull the engine without removing the transaxel that would be fantastic.

        Thanks for the welcome btw.

There are 7 bolts that attach the tranny to the engine. Those are accessible from the top. Then you will also need to unbolt the flexplate from the torque convertor. To do this, remove the tranny shield on the bottom of the engine and rotate the engine over (with a breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt) until you can see a bolt. Remove the bolt, then turn the engine over another 90 degrees until you come to the next bolt. Do this until all bolts are removed (should be 4).

Alright, sounds fairly simple. Just have to get off the AC compressor and disconnect the exhaust and she will be ready to disconnect from the tranny and pull. Ive been having one hell of a time with this engine and am not looking forward to doing this all over again with the donor.

I hope I can remember how everything goes back together for the new engine.
