  • Chevy Trans Sport 3.4 engine

    Hello everyone,
    I'm looking for a lightweight engine...
    I found this Trans sport here in Italy equipped by 3.4 V6..
    I need this engine for a prototype..

    [LA1
    The LA1 3400 ("E-code") was a bored-out version of the 3100. It retained the OHV layout of the previous engine, and was first utilized on the 1996 U platform minivans and appeared in a car for the first time in the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and Oldsmobile Alero. A 92 mm (3.6 in) bore with the same 84 mm (3.3 in) stroke brought the displacement to 3.4 L (3,350 cc/207 cu in). Like the LG8, the LA1 featured numerous common parts with the similar GM High Value engine family. Power was up to 170 hp-185 hp (127 kW to 138 kW) and torque was 210 lb·ft (285 N·m).]

    Do you think it could be an easy engine swap?
    I mean, do you think that this engine from a 1998 chevrolet has a lot of ECUs ?
    I dont want to spend a lot of money with a new programmable ECU or have some problems to start this engine.
    Here in Italy, nobody knows anything about this engine..
    Please let me knows something.
    Thank you!

    Welcome!

    what are you putting it in?

    a lot of us have swapped that same engine into various other cars, it's very reliable after some general maintenance and you have a lot of options when it comes to ECM's.

    1. You can run it on the original harness and OBD2 ECM
    2. You can run it on a 88-94 Chevy Cavalier ECM and harness (OBD1) - will require a chip to run correctly.
    3. You can run it on any number of aftermarket ECM's like a Megasquirt. You will have to tune it yourself though.
    Past Builds;
    1991 Z24, 3500/5 Spd. 275WHP/259WTQ 13.07@108 MPH
    1989 Camaro RS, ITB-3500/700R4. 263WHP/263WTQ 13.52@99.2 MPH
    Current Project;
    1972 Nova 12.73@105.7 MPH

      Could that be a cousin of the currently advertised crate engine at GM direct With a hotter street cam? They list it as the HT 3.4 for truck use, Asking $1850 or so. Quoting the ad:
      "GM PART # 12363230 CATEGORY: All PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
      GM LIST: $2,226.25 OUR PRICE: $1,852.24 DESCRIPTION: 3.4L ENGINE
      HT 3.4 160 Horse Power"
      Will that engine bolt up to my Getrag? I've heard they weren't bossed right. I'de really like to start off my Fiero reconstruction with a new engine.

        Well..I'm going to put it in a nude chassis for an "off road buggy" so I will have to use much original electronic.
        For example..You said that his electronic is quite simple, but can I start this engine on a pallet like this?

          Want an upgrade for my '86 Fiero GT

          When I aquired my'86 Fiero GT, it had a 2¾" hole in the side of the block from when the #5 rod departed the crank, so I need a new engine, I'm also taking out the automatic and putting in a Getrag, so whatever engine I chose must have the proper bosses to match up. I figure to replace the cam and put the regular distributor back in, as well as using the Fiero port injection setup, making the engine "LOOK" as close to stock as possible...Bill

            What you are doing is called highjacking a thread... knock it off.. start your own thread. The HT 3.4 crate engine or the 3.4 out of an F-body are direct bolt in engine swaps with a relocation of the starter to the other side. You swap over the distributor and intake from the Fiero 2.8 and end up with a choked off 3.4 in your Fiero that won't hit stock F-body power numbers.

              Yes you can, but you obviously need 12V, Fuel and cooling system hookups... you don't need to use a Body Control Module with the Cavalier ECM option.
