  • 2.8 cevy v6 to replace 3.1 in 93 Trans-Port?

Can I replace a 3.1 in a 93 Pontiac Van with a 2.8 Cevy v6? I bought the motor to put in an s10 but I think it is a front wheel drive motor because the starter is on the opposite side of the s10. The s10 trans bolted on but the flywheel and converter didnt line up (the bolt holes) The new 2.8 is all cast iron and so is the 3.1 in the van ; they look identical. The 2.8 has a T on the side. It is a new goodwrench aand has Mexico on side. Will it work and will computer work? First time on the board and just learning. The guy paid $1700 for motor , I thought it was for an s10 but it is too late to bring it back so I want to use it in this van if it is front -wheel drive . thanks musky2

Well it will work but the only thing is the power will drop.

Whats wrong with the 3.1 in the van? Depending on the shape of that engine, maybe you could stroke the 2.8 so that the power doesn't drop.

What year 2.8 is it? If it is a FWD iron head 2.8, chances are high it is externally balanced. The 3.1 is internally balanced, and would equire an internally balanced 2.8 to replace it. If not, you would need to swap to the appropriate flywheel/flexplate.

I dont know what year the 2.8 is ; I bought it new in the crate thinking it was for an s10 rwd but I think it is a FWD motor because the starter is on the opposite side as an s10. The flywheel that came with the new 2.8 wouldnt match up to the s10 torque converter ( bolt holes didnt line up and when pulling the converter to the flywheel the converter is too far out to engage properly with pump in tranny. The 88 s10 trans did bolt up to the engine though. I dont want to hassel with the 3.1 since I have no idea whats wrong with it : I bought the van with the heads off. I just want to use this new motor instead of letting it waste. Im not worried about alot of power , as long as its not rediculously low. If the new engine is externally balanced it should still work if I use the balancer and flywheel that come on the new engine.; If the flywheel on the new motor bolts to the converter in the van. Im just asking , I dont know. Is the 3.1 a stroked 2.8?

Yes the 3.1L is a stroked 2.8L. Take the pan off the 2.8L does it have reluctor wheel in the middle of the crank? If so it is internal balance.

This is a reluctor wheel. You may or may not have the notches in the wheel it will not matter

I will have to check to see if it has the relucter wheel. The new 2.8 came with the front balancer and the flexplate on it so whether its internal or external the engine is balanced. Now problem would be if torque converter bolts to the new motors flexplate , am I correct? Doesnt seem like cubic inch difference is that much but with all this computer stuff these days I dont know. Im just stuck with this new crate 2.8 and picked up a perfect 93 Trans-Sport for $125 .. Im not sure what year the new motor is ; I wrote down all the numbers on the engine I could find :gm14054882and 3 or 2 oj , theres a big T on side of engine some oyher numbers are 69799100 . All these numbers are hard to see so they might be wrong. motor mounts are : 4 on one side and 3 on other side .
