  • swapping 3.1 into 1991 wrangler

well after finding out how cheap everything for the sunfire is, ive decided to leave the engine in it, & i guess the timing was right because the 4.0 I6 in the jeep (94 motor) blew up & now needs replaced.

well since i have a tite-less 1991 3.1 lumina with a good motor, wiring harness, & etc... & since the jeep 4 cylinders have the same bolt pattern as a 60* RWD, after hearing all of my bragging about these engines & that gas mileage & etc...

my girlfriends parents decided to put up the money to swap the 3.1 into the jeep on the basis that it wont be gutless by comparison & that the gas mileage will be better.

my questions to you guys are:

does anyone know of any companies that make motor mounts that would require little modification or am i going to have to make the mounts?

does anyone make RWD headers for this application (i have a set that i can modify but her dad says if anyone makes them hed like to buy them).

and what problems might i run across, from anyone that may know or have an idea because i dont know a whole lot about wranglers.

this is not a "what-if", this is a "will have the money in a few days & want to get this done". so any help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

Rebuild the I6. Its cheaper. Plus it makes more power and gobs more torque. If you want to get fancy get yourself a 4.2L rotating assembly and make a 4.5 L Stroker. With an overbore you can make a 4.7L.

You don't have to put a 60 degree V6 is everything.

her dad drives it around at 1000-1500 rpms everywhere, 2 gears too high, even climbing hills, its awful but we dont know how to explain to him that this is BAD and exactly why, to the point that he doesnt think we are just bitching about his driving.

its a 5 speed & he will climb a steep/big hill at like 35 mph in 5th & it sounds like a tractor when he does it LOL

Its not bad really. You will just get shitty performance and mileage. The engine has a knock sensor so it wont detonate or ping under load. Plus the engine is not making max torque so there is not lots of load on the bearings. The only thing that may be bad is if the oil pressure is marginal and he is working the engine with low pressure.

actually, depending on where his foot is during these fifth-gear uphills, it may be increasing his dynamic compression, increasing fuel economy....

this isnt happening-i found the title & key to the lumina after looking for it for over 6 months, so im definitely not carving it up!

and his foot is to the floor when he drives like that, but hes not, because it blew up.

don't be too rough on him... at least there was a good reason this time as to why the idea wasn't pursued further...
