I need help, I've read most of the post and threads but I'm still stuck. I put a 06 Pontiac G6 3.5 in my 1999 Grand Am, Where the 3.4 died. Every thing is in and I used the 3.4 upper part of the intake to retain the TB and the throttle cable. I put the pick up and the dampner on from the 3.4. BUT the cam posistion sensor and the crank sensor in the block are different, the crank one has 3 wires and the old one only two. The old ones don't fit the 3.5 block. Now I've read the 7 vs 56 crank info and here is where I get stuck. It won't fire so do I need a later computer or what.

you need the external crankshaft trigger sold in the wot-tech store.
it bolts in front of your crank pulley and allows you to use the old 7x trigger that your ignition module needs.
did you install the 3400 fuel rail and injectors as well?

Superdave, more info on WOT-tech store?
Superdave, With regards to the 3.5 in a 99 Grand Am, you told me I need an external crank trigger from WOT-Tech Store, who are they and do you have a phone number for them. I'm a new member and don't know who they are or how to get intouch with them. You also asked which fuel rail I used in my swap. I used the 3.4 fuel rail and injectors and I used the 3.4 coil pack because it fit my wiring. Now what about the cam posistioning sensor, its 3 wire like my 3.4 was but the wire color code is different. Is there anything else I need to know to get this runnung? And after its running do you think my existing ECM will need any tuning from the 3.4 to the 3.5? Thanks

Barry, the cam sensor in the 3.4 won't fit the 3.5 engine. I pulled both out of their block and they are completely different. The wires that run to them are different colors too. So will my ECM reconize the 3.5 sensor and how do I wire it up. I looked it the hole where the cam sensor goes and the front of the cam and it too looks different than the 3.4. Thanks for any help. Steve

Superdave, thanks for the help on the 3.5. But do I need to do something special for the cam sensor. The 3.5 sensor is not interchangeable with the old 3.4 one. The wires are a different color combination too. And when I get it running do you think the ECM will need any tuning, I'm hoping it does not. Thanks for your help. Steve

Use your stock position sensor in the TCE external wheel. The Grand AM cam sensor "might" work as we have discussed in the past, that all the sensors are falling rate and have the lobe located in the same position on all the SFI 60 degrees.
Your stock ECM and tune should allow you to start and run, but a new PROM program would definitely be beneficial.

others have spliced the 3500's cam sensor into the 3400 harness. I'm not familiar with the OBD2 side of things. I only needed the crankshaft position sensor to run the 3500 in my Cavalier. Cam position and 24x crank aren't used.

I used a cam sensor for a 3400 and dropped it in place of the 3500 one-no problems. the crank trigger I had to play with the adjustment because it was harder to get started @ 0 think I moved it towards the bottom 7* and its running good I really should get a timing light on it, but that will be when I start tuning. The stock ecm is doing good for now but it would make more power from a tune!1999 Olds Alero 2.4 to 3500 swap (running). totaled by a honda

i'd move it back to 0 and work on the tune from there.. you are losing a ton of power having it in that position.

Cam sensor, fit your old 3400 one in or splice into the 3500 one like said. Is the hole a different size for the 3500 sensor? Others have not had a problems swapping...
For the 7x crank sensor you need the external adapter. The 24x one you installed with the dampener will work of course.sigpic New 2010 project (click image)

I don't remember if the hole size was different for the cam sensor, but the 3.4 one was longer by maybe 3/4"-1". Because of that I didn't try it. I've spliced in the 3.5 one but the wire colors are different. Until I get the crank posistioning sensor adapter I won't know if I guessed right on the splice. I'm just ordering the adapter today so in a week or so I'll let you all know where I'm at, But thanks to all so far for the help. Steve
