  • 94 isuzu trooper engine swap from camaro help

I currently have a 1994 3.2L SOHC Isuzu trooper with a Five speed manual 4x4 transmission. I was looking into swapping out the bad motor with a camaro v6 out of a 94-95. Any information on the subject would be of great help.

PS I have been looking for a forum like this for months and just stumbled on it by using dogpile.

I went to look at the 95 camaro engine today and I had my 5 speed manual to see if it would fit on the engine block. The alinement sleeves did not aline to anything and most of the bolt holes did not line up. I am confused I had read that this engine should bolt in.

Here is a guy who did a Camaro 3.4L/3.1L hybrid swap into a 1990 Isuzu Trooper. I don't know how much the body design/engine compartments differ between his 1990 and your 1994... but if you visit this link, perhaps he can give you a heads up on what he did to make it all work... (Tons of pics...)

V6 - I need pictures of your 3.1L V6's! - I have a 3.4L in my Trooper and I'm mixing and matching parts to make it fit better in the engine bay. In the process, I'm switching to the better flowing 3.1L intake. I would like pictures of some complete engines so I can figure out how this is all supposed to go back...

The 3.2L V6 Isuzu engine has a dual bolt pattern on the back. The manual transmission pattern is strictly Isuzu (as you've discovered). The automatic pattern is GM 60*. Anyway, that means the bellhousing you have on your Isuzu tranny won't work on a Camaro V6. However, depending on what the tranny is, you may be able to use a 96-01 2.5L Dodge Dakota bellhousing to hook the tranny and engine together. It will only work with the Isuzu AR5.

thanks for the photo. I will see if my 94 trooper has a removable bell housing on the manual transmission.

The MUA5 (your Transmission) does not have a removable bellhousing, and as you know by now it uses an Isuzu pattern. I don't think it is a wise decision to swap out the 3.2L motor. It is a very good motor and can be upgraded by switching to the 3.2L DOHC version for a little more power. Check out www.planetisuzoo.com.

If you originally has a GM 2.8L in your Trooper then yes the 3.4L swap would be a great idea.

It looks like rebuilding the 3.2L or picking up a used motor would be the easy route to take being I would like to keep the manual. I am however thinking about looking into putting a 4.3L gm vortex motor that I have out of my daughters 94 blazer that has a bad transmission. I was looking at some adaptors that race cars use to bolt 60 degree motors to th350 transmissions. These adaptor run about $65 but would have to be used in for the SBC to MA5. If there would be enough metal on the adaptor plate I may be able to get it in proper alinement. It would be a long shot but worth the money if it would work. I will keep looking on Craigs list for a wrecked trooper or parting out trooper for a donor engine being it would be the easiest.

Again I wouldn't bother. The one good thing about the 4.3L is its sheer displacement for being a V6 but it is heavy considering the power it makes, very wide and is not a smooth operating motor. If I were you I would rebuild that 3.2L like you are planning to and then when you are ready for more power put on the 3.2L supercharger.
