i have a 95 monte carlo z34 and i recently found out that it needs new head gaskets and i think i've had enough with this high maintenance, hard to work on engine. i'm going to college in the fall and i need something cheaper and more reliable.
I know that most people convert 3.1L to the 3.4 DOHC that I have in my car, but I think I might do the opposite. My question is:
1. From what I've heard the 3.1's are more reliable, but what do you guys think?
2. Will the 3.1 bolt up to the 3.4 engine mounts and transmission without modifications?
3. I could always fix the engine that I have in my car; the car only has 96k miles on it...but the mechanic i would take it to wants $1,100 to fix it and i think that me and my dad and a friend (who are all good with cars) could pull the engine and install a different one for cheaper. Do you guys think it would be any cheaper to pick up a used engine and do it ourselves?
4. do you think that its worth the hassle and money to keep my monte carlo running or do you think it would be wiser to sell it for cheap and buy a (*sigh*)toyota (or something mechanically superior to this POS engine). From what I've read, the only downside to installing the 3.1 is the obvious power difference.
5. If the 3.1 won't work with this car, are there any other options as far as engines? without (much) modification
give me your opinions. thanks
