  • 2.8 (tbi to carb swap)

hey guys, new to the site. I have many questions hope I can find what I need from here.
I have a 85' s10 with the 2.8 v6 2bbl carb. The motor spun a bearing and now I have a replacement motor. The catch is that the replacement motor I have is out of a 91 and it's a tbi. my questions are, what all do needs to be done to make this a successful swap with minimal issues. I know i'm going to hit road bumps on the way but maybe with advice this will go smoother. I have both motors torn down to long blocks pretty much.

You want to keep the carb? If so its not that hard. Everything from your old motor will bolt to the new motor. You will need to use a neutral balance flywheel or flexplate. NOT the one off your 85 motor. You will also need to convert to an electric fuel pump because there is no mounting pad for a fuel pump on the new motor. Most pumps made for carburetor applications have an internal regulator and will work when spliced into your existing fuel system. DO NOT run an EFI pump unless you plan on installing a bypass regulator and return line to the tank.

the fuel pump I planned on. I found a mr.gasket pump that runs 4-5psi and like 75gph, i'm not sure if gph and psi have any correlation with each other. my big question is is there anything else that I'd need to change like sensors? I know being carbed and all there reall isn't much for sensors but i'm just trying to cover all my bases. Right now I'm in the process of getting a gasket kit so I can freshen it up a little. I'm not sure if I mentioned in my last post about there being new freeze plugs in it, can I assume that it has been rebuilt??

don't assume anything when it comes to cars, it's something I've learned over the years.
The only way you will know if has been rebuilt is a receipt for what was done and purchased.

this is the same round of questions i was gonna ask since i scrapped ALL of the OEM stuff for my motor (1993 sonoma motor). i've heard that older blocks and heads aren't interchangable with newer stuff (ie. 1985-86 blocks and heads onto 1992-93 blocks)...sorry to hikack your thread but it's good to know ahead of time if this is true.

If your talking iron heads then they are all compatible through all years. Aluminum heads are a different story. They will bolt to the block but a lot of components need to be changed.

so what you're saying is, my '93 block will take '85 heads as long as they're the iron heads with no mods...what about the Eddy carb manifold?...should bolt down the same as well with no mods if the block and heads match and mate together, right?...if that's the case, then i'm game to rebuild and carb mine...just gotta get a 5 spd now...annndd...the rest of the stuff!
