  • 2.8 to 3.1 ecm change?

I have taken a 3.1 1989 FWD from a Grand Prix and have it in a sandrail. The ECM is from a 1988 cutlass that had the 2.8 and 5 speed. While it runs well it doesn't seem to have the pop the 2.8 did. Any thoughts on rev limit between the two. I have bounced off it a few times. I did have the 2.8 in the rail before but the block cracked. I move over the loom from the 2.8. The 3.1 just seems to be lacking in response department. Any input welcome.

is that a MAF or speed density system? if is SD, that could explain it: your 3.1 is running on a 2.8 tune=lean=less power=possible damage. if its a MAF setup..... i don't know.

Try a chip from a 1990 Cavalier Z24. You can get rid of the MAF but there are 2 wires that run to it that will need to be spliced into a regular IAT sensor.

you could run a newer chip than that but that depends on the tranny you have..

I have a manual that is in no way hooked to the computer (vw bus trans). Can I assume I could get this chip at a scrap yard? The computer is wired to run in "open loop".
