  • 3.1 to a 3100

Hi, I have a 2000 Malibu with a 3100 that is blowed up and I also have a 91 Corsica with a 3.1 v6. My question is can I take the 3.1 out of the Corsica and put it in the 2000 Malibu? Will the intake, injectors, and the exhaust manifolds bolt up on the 3.1 from my 3100?

that is a horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible idea.

certain things would work, but not much. why go through the trouble when 2000+ 3100s are very easy to find and cheap.

First off, it is against federal regulations to install an older engine into a newer vehicle. So that right there is a reason that it will not work. Second, the PCM for the Malibu will be looking for various sensors that the 3.1 from the Corsica does not have, therefore it will not run right. There are a ton more reasons why NOT to do the swap, but those 2 right there should be enough.

              3.1

SO the block is different therefore the the sensors from the 3100 will not work in the 3.1. Is that correct. Will the intake and fuel injection system work with the heads on the older 3.1 off of the newer 3100?

The 3.1L doesn't have a place for the camsensor.

technicly it would run(without a cam sensor), but not in SFI mode. isn't that what the PCM does when the cam sensor stops working?

                    same question almost

i basicly have the same question. i know im dumb about newer cars thats why im here! i just baught a 96 beretta z-26 with a 3100v-6. it was supposed to need a fuel pump, but was blown up. i also own a wrecked 93 grand prix with a 3.1 v-6. where i live there is no inspection,so i dont need to worry about that. what would be involved in putting the 3.1 in place of the 3100. i can change anything needed off the grand prix, as it is still complete. thanks and please dont beat up on me too much, im just broke and need to try and use what i have to have something to drive.

                      To answer some questions.
The 3.1 mpfi engine will be lacking these things:
                      Cam sensor
                      24x Crank sensor

And NO the intakes from the 3100 won't fit the 3.1 heads.

You could take the whole 3100 top off, heads and all, and put it on the old block, and get custom length push rods to make it work, but you'd still be missing the cam sensor. The 24x crank sensor could be swapped over with the 3100 timing chain and crank pulley.

Bottom line, it's not gonna work or be pretty unless you have a way to re-program the ECM (DHP) and order custom push rods and do a lot of work.

Less work, and money in gaskets/etc to just grab a low mileage 3100/3400 and swap that into the 96. 3400's swap in real easy. 2000+ 3100 same thing just smaller bore as 3400. You'll need the 2000+ EGR and tube though. Or a 96-99 3400 UIM. Other than that it all is the same. Oh and coolant heater pipe in teh LIM, but you can adapt that to your old or tap the LIM with 3/4" NPT i think it is.

deals are out there.. my buddy blew the 3100 in his 96 Lumina, he picked up a whole 94 Corsica for $150 and we stuck that 3100 in there. Runs like a top.

Yes it was technically illegal but atleast it was the same generation of engine with all the proper sensors. EGR and other stuff was kept from the 96 engine.

Most of what we do to our cars here is illegal even when no engine swap is involved so it's probably not worth mentioning. A replacement 3100 should be easy to find. I didn't see where you mentioned the nature of the engine failure. A blown head gasket, or intake gasket, bad rod bearing, etc...
