  • 02 GA-wanna ditch the 2.4 & drop in 3100-how?

my cousins 2.4 Grand Am blew up & hes looking to get a running engine in it soon but i am having no luck finding any of these 2.4s in good shape-out of the cars (they are all blown up, what a shocker!!)-he said hed pay for the 3.1 swap if it wont be rediculous-im just concerned as to how much of a pain this is going to be.

if i get a engine/trans out of a 3.1 obd2 GA-will i be able to use stock 3.4 GA engine/trans mounts from that year or stock 3.1 GP mounts from that year-or will i for sure have to fab motor/trans mounts?

also what all am i going to need to do to install the new ecm-can i cut and rewire or will i need to gut the dash & rewire EVERYTHING?

you will need a 4t45e from a 3400 GA/alero or a 4t40e from a malibu, 3400 engine harness from the same year GA, front engine mount from a 3400 n-body 99+ or malibu 97+. I used the 3 trans mounts from the quad 4. you will also need the proper pcm from a GA/ Alero from the same year to keep things simple, 3400 upper and lower rad hoses, 3400 throttle cable.

that should get you started, I am sure there are things that I am missing right now.

Why would you ever wanna trade a 2.4 LD9 for a 3.1. The 2.4L are so much more reliable and get better gas mileage then the 3.1 any day. Not sure why yours blew up but I for sure would not put a 3.1 in place of it.

2.4 quad 4 reliable LOL.and i am sure when he say's 3.1 he mean 3100 lots of people makes that mistake.
as for the swap just find a 3100 powered GA and swap everything over

Aren't 2002 GA's affordable with either engine setup? Just get the whole car with the engine combo you want.

Fix the only broken one with stock stuff and sell it, then buy what you really want if GM already made it for you. It will save a lot of time and probably be cleaner in the end.

ive -never- heard anyone refer to ANY of the quad 4 engines as reliable! we looked for a used one & they couldnt be found because they were all blown up-eventually he found one & had it put in but he paid $600 just for the engine, which is less than putting in a 3x00 would have been im betting. its a shame, because i know that pos ld9 is going to take a dump on him but oh well, maybe in 3 mos when THAT one blows up i can look back into this.

the Quad 4 is one of the biggest POS things GM ever put in a car. It's a joke of an engine. I'd rather have my fingernails ripped off than replace another headgasket in one.

Like the others said, grab a 3100 engine/trans combo with all the mounts, ecm and harness out of another grand am and drop it in.

Why would you want to drop a 3100 into a car that came with a 3400 as the V6 option??
