Newbee and need a little assist as well as give some if needed and love to share. Putting out a challenge here, do I have any takers?
Did a major engine swap in a 1986 jeep commanche with a 1995 3.4 camaro engine and loving it, had fun was a challenge and couln't have done it with out this website.
My problem for the last 3 months now is: Engine dies when it feels like it, doesn't matter if its cold or hot or what day of the week it is. Sometimes it will run for one week other times 2 weeks and once in a while every other day. Does not start back up right away, sometimes it has to set for 5 min. other times 20 min. (It gets better), if I disconnect the power wire and battery for a few minutes then reconnect it will start right up. Today I did the routine and almost called a tow truck after 1/2 hour.
What is current and have always had from day one was a low voltage fuel pump code 54. I have replaced the in tank fuel pump with a walboro, wired it direct temporarily to the battery and jumped the wire from pcm signal to 12v and still get the code. I run with a code reader all the time plugged in to catch anything unusual, one time I caught a code low speed crank sensor so I replaced it. When it dies now I can't even read the PCM. I have ran the engine with every sensor disconnected except the map just to see what would happen, it didn't matter. I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter, plugs and wires, TPS, oil level, oil pressure, crank pos low voltage sensors, ICM and PCM. I ohmed all wires at PCM to fuel systems wiring (good), bypassed PCM fuel pump signal with toggle switch to insure fuel pressure was not an issue. I have a 3100 core that uses the same injectors and swapped them out. Took it to a GM mechanic to let him tinker with it and he couln't figure it out. There's more but I think it would be confusing to keep going and besides this is too long of a story I think which I appologize.

Thanks, I am talking about a 3.4 camaro engine that dies when it feels like it....

If you loose communication with the PCM when it happens, do you still have a SES light? If not, the PCM would be dead or not getting power at that point. I would almost think short on the PCM power wire or the wire from the ignition switch to the PCM, a ground going bad, or bad PCM. Check the easiest first and have a looksy at your grounds.

I do not have the ses light hooked up because I installed the engine in an 86 jeep comanchee. I do have power to the PCM when this happens, have test light and a fuse to the pcm out in the open. I also check my fuse panel and have power to all of them to include the 50A bosh relay for the fuel pump. I also have power to the injectors Pink wire.

Off the top of my head I would say crank sensor in the block. But you did replace that one right? How was the condition of the harness you used? Typically they are in good shape. There is not much that goes wrong with them.

I replaced the 3x crank sensor on the side of the block awhile ago. Now I will replace the cam and 24x crank sensor. I did check the pins in the plugs which looked ok, made them a little tighter just in case and noticed a small water leak (antifreeze) in that area of the 24x crank sensor plug, can't believe it would cause any issues. I will address that one tomorrow.
Thx fellas any ideas are appreciated

That sensor would not cause a no start condition though. Only the one in the block would cause starting issues.

It did it again but this time I was able to retrieve codes. Cam sensor, 24x crank sensor and as always low voltage code fuel pump even though it is on always with the key on (temporary). I replaced the cam sensor today and will wait on to do the crank just to start process of elimination.
When I pulled cam sensor out it had fine fileings of metal surrounding it. XROSS the fingers..

in my adventures with automobiles new parts do not always dictate good parts. most of the crank sensors that plug directly into the side of the block will have a crack in the plastic housing when bad. same with cam sensors.if these sensors are not your problem i would inspect all my grounds and replace any that are questionable. metal shavings are alwalys a sign that something is wrong. i would want to know where they came from before i invested money in a motor that was going to fail. good luck.

So far so good, hasn't quit once. I did not replace the 24X crank sensor based on Betterthanyou thanks for the reply.
