  • Wht will work together 2.8 and 3.4 parts

I have a 88 Fiero (fully original engine) which is currenty sounding very much like a bad rod or main bearing.

I also have a spare 2.8 from an 86 Fiero and a 3.4 ffrom a Fire Bird. Basic questions

I know I have to do some mechine work to put the front mount 3.4 into the fireo, ( swap sides of the starter) and a couple more minor items; and I don't want to do that much work right now as I hope to rebuild the original engine in the future and return it to the 88 to keep the SN matching.

As an interum fix and get the car back on the road I would like to know if I can

    1. Can I put the crank and cam from the 3.4 into the earlier 2.8 block without any mod?

    2. If this possible, what stroke am I looking at for the 3.4 crank?

That sounds like WAYYYY more work than just swapping the spare 2.8 in there since you are just trying to get it back on the road ASAP... Is there a reason you would want to do a crank swap? Does your spare engine also have a rod knock?

By the time you do all the work you are planning just to make one of your spare engines hold you over until you can re-build the 88 2.8, you could have just rebuilt the 88 2.8 and been done with it!

Yes you can put the 3.4L crank into the 2.8L block all you need to change are the pistons. You need to use 3.1L pistons and if you do this mod thats what you will end up with. A .040 over 3.1L will give you a 3.2L

RE Mongo 1 Not suire if the 2.8 is rebuildable and 2. I dont really want to leave the car appart for a long period of time.

After all the good input here and on the fiero list; I suspect I will just go ahead and do the machine work on the 3.4 to make it fit in the fiero and then rebuild it.

I can put all the parts from the spare 2.8 on is (Heads included ) and only have to upgrade the injectors and buy a reprogramed prom to give it the correct air fuel mixture. It will still be starved for air but I can also buy a over bored throttle body and fix most of that as well.

I will try to take pictures an ddocument on both sites as I go, It will be a slow work in progress due to $s and spare time.

The TB isn't the main restriction. Just before it flares out into the plenum, the intake neck on the UIM is actually smaller in cross-section than the TB.

Thank you for that bit of info. I was lead to beleave the samllest part was the throttle body itself. I even considered using a 3.4 or 3.1 throttle body and plenum but they port to the passanger side not the drivers side as the fiero does.
