  • Gas Gauge flaking out - HELP

My Fuel Gauge will jump to FULL when I start the car and then in a few seconds will Drop to EMPTY the warning light and beep will come on. This has no regard for how much gas I have in the car. I bought the 99 Malibu with blown engine and just swapped a 3500 and is running great, but now fixing all the other minor issues (like knowing how much gas I have in the tank - hehe). Is it sending unit or have others found similar situations and other things fixed - without dropping the tank.

put in new PUMP and sending unit

the new unit did not solve the issue. Well at least I got a new pump Any have thoughts or resolution to flaky meter? Is it Computer issues or simply a gauge issue. Anyone encounter this issue before??

      New PLUG was the issue

Well the new unit was the fix, but the wire that came with the unit was defective. The wire from the top of the fuel pump that runs to the plug in the underbody had an issue. The small connectors inside the Female plug was mashed. I had to pull each one out and stretch the inside of the connector out to ensure it contacted the male portion of the plug on the underbody. Pump and Gauge work great now.
But inspection of the old gauge did show the connectors on the float arm were worn off and not touching anthing to register the float position.
Just FYI for others that might encounter this issue.
